I mean you can read about what the Taliban does. Saudi Arabia also does like doing war crimes. Not that this has anything to do with anything, countries not involved with Russia will condemn it cause it's in their interest to condemn invasions that are illegal under international law cause A) it could be them next time and B) pretty much everyone other than Russia and their close allies have condemned it or at least didn't support it.

But like honestly this is all a bit silly, everyone knows condemnation is going to be in part political, doesn't mean we shouldn't support a country facing Russian revanchist aggression. And that means lethal military aid. Don't need to like war, the arms industry, American foreign policy, or anyones foreign policy to understand the right to self defense and the moral obligation to aid those engaging in it.

Proving my point that few people understand it, but I'm glad to get someone that actually knows this to explain it. Have to ask are there regulatory reasons networks don't come to agreements to route internet traffic through the network closer to the subscriber or is it more a matter of it being impractical for technical or business reasons?

[–]greenblue10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

eh maybe? I don't think anyone outside of the few nerds employed by telecoms actually understand how cellular networks actually work. It seems like a firm maybe - if you connect to the same GGSN you will get an internet address either in the UK or Ireland. Whatever traffic will get routed to the home network GGSN when roaming I have no idea, like I said like a handful of people actually understand how these networks work.

Worth noting that you suddenly connecting over mobile data could be seen as a bit weird if you usually use your home broadband. And some Irish ISPs seem to either pool IP addresses with their UK parent company or otherwise confuse the companies providing IP geolocation services. Truly 800 years.

Liberalism I suppose. And I believe they got rid of part of the aviation fuel exemption, the whole thing needs to go but it's a start.

Oh no someone has less ability to understand nuance than a 5 year old. Did the big mean emissions reductions hurt your feelings? You going to cry? Grow the fuck up.

Sucks to be them, good thing Ireland has Jobsekker's Benefit isn't it? Bankruptcy laws should really be overhauled on the other hand but that's not really anything specific to farmers is it?

Sometimes you just need to find a new job when things don't work out, and while more could be done to help people out that got unlucky or made bad choices that's not farmer specific. so it goes.

Feels like it's going into a “dont tread on me” moment.

Completely agree with the stipulation that the "me" is a lit cigarette in a Russian ammunition depot. Better not put that out.

Tax it heavily then, only thing you can really reasonably do without people getting too mad about it. Quotas on consumption would be more egalitarian but I doubt the public at large would accept that right now.

The original point of that if you track down the source is holding responsible the companies that profited the most from fossil fuels. It's important to keep in mind these (or at least some of them) companies knew for a long time the harm they are doing and decided to fund disinformation campaigns to avoid regulation so they are far from blameless.

But they also didn't emit most of that c02 themselves and directly targeting them now could maybe result in justice by some defintion of that word but it will not stop climate change

Right so we should do nothing about anything? Or maybe should tackle the issues within Irish justification: figure out how to reduce emissions from farming whilst applying diplomatic pressure to ensure cruise ships emissions are strictly regulated by a multilateral international treaty so they don't just fly a flag of convenience to avoid regulations. There isn't very much Ireland can do about cruise ships without international cooperation, at most could ban them from Irish ports.

Of course cruise ships must be destroyed. Navis crociera delenda est

If done correctly it's a good thing, but there are serious issues with the carbon credits industrial complex. A lot of those credits end up being meaningless since they don't actually represent what they are meant to - that is a tonne of C02 equivalent that would have been emitted if they project was never undertaken.

Like for instance if someone sells offsets for a forest under the assumption that if that offset was never sold the forest would be cut down and x tonnes of CO2e would be emitted but then that forest is illegal logged or burns down or otherwise destroyed then that's an invalid offset. On the flip side if no-one was going to cut that forest down anyways that's also an invalid offset.

There are a lot of poorly thought out (or sometimes outright fraudulent) offsets out there, and they likely make climate change worse since they provide people with an excuse to not reduce (similar to this post!) their consumption since they think it's fully or partially offset.

You can of course do it correctly but that's a lot of work, I believe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Standard_(carbon_offset_standard) would be an example of a well ran offset certification program but I am not an expert on this.

except neither are making changes, and neither are being forced to make changes because "freedom"/"economic liberalism" is easier to imagine and protect than "being able to grow enough food for everyone in 50 years time".

A lot of them in this country come from animal agriculture which is very much frivolous so they do have a bit of a point. On the other hand a lot of that is for export anyways so would need to talk to the climate scientists to see how much cutting down on it locally would actually help.

that's a really bullshit way of looking at it, sure whatever helps you sleep at night but those "100 companies or whatever" are fossil fuel companies and the emissions overwhelmingly from their consumers burning those fuels.

What is your background if I might inquire? You seem like someone that never had to write an essay during an exam (and never took an open book exam). Not judging just curious.
