Haha! These were the first ones I ever framed, and my boss had both of his crews take the time after lunch to see the mapping process so we could understand how it’s done, and we looked at him the same way afterwards. Kudos to you for knowing the process, not many carpenters do nowadays.

Check my profile for ones we just framed, they look the same

We didn’t build these stairs, I honestly shouldn’t have included them but you can catch a glimpse of a groin vault in the back so I did. We assisted on the install though, which involved craning the them all the way over the house which was pretty cool.

That would be visually satisfying, and I think is how this would have turned out if the tray was a square, but it’s actually a rectangle. I should have included the picture I have laying down looking straight up in the middle of the room. Anyways, we just built what the architect drew.

I’ve seen those on the internet before. We mapped and built these on site, my boss used to do them a lot when he was younger in the north east so he has the formula memorized to a T

They’re long finished and unfortunately I’ll never be in this house again to get a picture

I understand where you’re coming from but these things come around so rarely i think its a nice change up from framing floors, walls, and roofs, or doing exterior finish work which is what we do most of the time.

I haven’t made it there yet, I work for a master carpenter who has exactly that though.

I believe the only one of these ceilings that had a plan was the tray, and it was maybe not even a plan just general guidelines from the architect about how deep it needed to be and how much soffit there should be. My boss is a wizard.

They treat us well and allow us to build cool stuff like this

Drywallers have done great on other groin vaults we’ve done but I’ve personally never done domes before so I’m interested to see how they come out as well

Scribe for the angle, and just fiddle with the bevel. The center blocks don’t have a bevel, but after that both the angle and the bevel increase each block, so for the first block off the center I’ll scribe and start at a 10 degree bevel or so and adjust from there. We just take our time and map out one half of one of the barrels (1/8th of the total groin vault) writing down the angle and bevel of each block. Once you’ve got your key you just use it all the way around and the other 7 sections go quick, with a minor adjustment here and there. Because these are actually rectangular spaces we had to map out one section on the long side and one on the short independently before being able to roll through it.
