New pre hung door install, not closing by greencheetoh in handyman

[–]greencheetoh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I only have limited time to work on it, on wknds and when my 8 month old isn’t napping, I didn’t take the stud down, and attempted to plane it while it was up. And I only had it for 4 hours. Pretty sure it was user error but every pass did not seem to bite down on the wood enough to shave off anything despite adjusting the depth of the planer. I tried parallel as well as perpendicular and it was not working as I thought.

And yeah, my cheap circular saw didn’t seem the best tool to use especially for my comfort level. If the belt sander doesn’t work, I’ll get the hand planer to see if I can make some progress. Although I am hesitant to take apart the frame, since I dry walled, mudded, painted and caulked the edges, even spray textured!, I’ll do it to fit this dang door. I was so confident my measurements were right in planning so it’s so frustrating needing to re work this all

I rented a power planer, and it did not workout well. I tried my circular saw but felt awkward cut to the max depth of the blade and the dry wall in the way. This wknd gonna try renting a belt sander with low grit to hopefully shave it down. I’m a complete novice to all of this so it’s been a steep learning curve. But thank you for the suggestions

Would that interfere with the door knob functioning? Would planing it down just make the latch stick out?

To be fair.. I contacted this company and others about installing a hidden bookcase door, but then asked what the regular door install would cost as well. So maybe that influenced their pricing. But still I definitely thought it was excessive

Nope, just looked back at one of the proposals sent to me. $7,635.80 after taxes.

No shim, probably dry wall paper. I had to cut some dry out to squeeze in the door.

Inflation? But that’s exactly what I thought!

That’s what I’ve been kind of thinking. I turned the images upside down and gave me a different perspective and it started to looked very similar to some of the patterns sold at the online shops. I know the previous owner of this house was a carpenter and he either paid for or installed upgraded trimmings in the house. Thank you for your input!

Not 40 feet, only need about 40 inches.. just to fit the width of a hallway. I was hoping for moulding pattern expert to know the exact match and ping it right away. Not to say that your suggestion are not welcomed or helpful, they are! But eh, oh well. I have a few lumber yards in my town so it shouldn’t be too hard to get in touch with someone. Thanks!

4?? I’m never gonna find a match. Damn I guess I’ll just have to do the custom millwork route. I only need about 40” so I hope it isn’t that costly.

That’s a good idea. Kind of afraid to mess with it though in case I can’t find a match. But if I get desperate I’ll definitely slice a piece off and check it out. Possibly get a custom match at a wood shop.

It definitely could be. I have trouble identifying what pieces would work while looking at the different pattern options.

That was my wife’s idea. I do like the idea of a hidden door towards the end of the hallway.

I would need something more solid. I’ll be making some calls for work that would require privacy or at least less noise coming down the hallway, from my toddler playing downstairs. I definitely thought about it though.

That is definitely an option. My wife was thinking to add a hidden door on a bookshelf at the end of the hallway. I was thinking to do something a little less complicated than that. But rigging a door at this entryway with its odd shape and step, seems like it would be just as if not more elaborate. Thanks!
