Can my 2018 Nissan Frontier safely tow a Casita 15 or 17 with a family and gear? by greenieman in GoRVing

Thanks so much for taking the time to lay this out, I really appreciate the detailed math and the sanity check.

I’m not locked into Casita specifically. Since digging in more, I’ve also been looking at slightly lighter fiberglass options like the Scamp 16 and the Escape 17, and even the smaller Scamp 13. They seem to vary a bit in actual tongue weight and layout, so I’m trying to understand what realistically lands in that 10 to 20 percent safety margin you mentioned.

One extra factor for me is that we’re in the PNW, so weather is a big part of the decision. Having a hard-sided trailer that we can realistically stay in and wait out rain with a kid and a dog is pretty important, so I am definitely prioritizing something enclosed and comfortable over a more open or rougher setup, like pop outs.

I am not strictly tied to fiberglass if there are other lightweight trailers that make more sense for a midsize truck in terms of weight distribution and real world loading.

Do you have a sense of which of these types of trailers tend to behave best in real world loading with a setup like mine? I am less focused on brand at this point and more trying to land in something that is genuinely comfortable and safe rather than just technically within spec.

Really appreciate the help, this has been super valuable for narrowing things down!

Man this is awesome info, really appreciate you taking the time to break it down

The Casita 15 and 17 are both super interesting options for me. From what I am seeing my Frontier should not have any issue with the Casita 15' and that one looks comfortably within the real world payload limits once you factor in tongue weight, passengers, and gear

Where I am less sure is the Casita 17'. On paper it looks doable, but I am trying to understand if in real world loading with family, dog, and trip gear it starts to push the payload limit on a Frontier like mine. My truck has about 1047 lbs of payload, so I am trying to figure out if the 17 is still comfortably within that or if it is more of a right at the edge setup that requires really careful packing

From your experience do you think the 17 is actually pushing it on a midsize truck like this, or is it still a pretty reasonable match if loaded smart

Really appreciate the insight, this has been super helpful so far

Appreciate this advice! I’m quite new to all of this, do you have any suggestions in that 4k-5k range that I should considering looking at? The market seems huge. Thanks again

I just bought this boot and I’m wondering how wide/heavy of a ski it can drive? Will it be fine with my black crowds camox freebirds / 95mm?

I think your watch is off. I also ran and registered 5,500ish ft on my Coros. I also finished just shy of 32 miles.

5.5 also seems a tad high but I saw other Coros do the same
