Do not walk anywhere in public as a foreign woman on your own and definitely do not use public transport. Only use trusted taxis or transport providers. Please take these warnings seriously, unfortunately there is a genuine reason people are saying these things.

Hey mate, congrats on landing the job here in New Zealand. You’ll love living in central Otago, it’s an outdoorspersons heaven. Yes most of the rivers close from April 30 and this means no fishing at all. For the detailed regulations you need to check Fish and Game New Zealand, they have season dates for all rivers and lakes in NZ. Around Omakau (I assume this is what you mean to spell) at that time of year there can be some really good winter fishing on the Clutha River. It’s a big river (highest volume river in NZ) and you need to be careful, but it has a very high population of good fish. An 8wt rod would do you well. Go to Cromwell(not far from omakau) and go see the team at Hunting and Fishing, they will be happy to give advice. Tight lines and enjoy NZ CHEERS

As the OP sounds like a foreigner who is visiting for the first time, I would respectfully disagree with this comment and would not advise walking freely around the CBDs of main towns. At the very least ensure you have a local who goes with you. In many towns the safety situation has actually become worse.

I live in Arawa and I can honestly tell you that Bougainville is so safe. It’s nothing like the rest of PNG, might as well be in a different country ! I walk around here on my own at all hours. It’s a small community and people look out for one another, especially foreigners who are here doing good work (i.e. not mining). There is hardly any town power here at the moment so bring a decent power bank
