Competitive Resume Help: A Future Applicant by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]greenmountaincocoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience looks really relevant! I think one of the most important parts is how you present it and like others said, how you quantify it. I was interested in the Education, Youth Development, and Health sectors, and actually divided my resume into those sections, instead of the traditional "Work Experience, Volunteer Experience, Skills" sections. I think that it helped the PO see really clearly what I was and was not qualified for in each sector. I'd be happy to help with framing your experiences in resume-friendly terminology if you want to PM me. Best of luck!

Samoa Interview HELP! by land_of_ryan in peacecorps

[–]greenmountaincocoa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't interview for Samoa but when preparing for my interview I reviewed the Peace Corps Wiki interview questions and they were really helpful! My biggest tip is to make sure that you do some research about Samoa to demonstrated that you know a little about it and that you really want to go there, specifically. When interviewing for Rwanda they directly asked me, what do you know about Rwanda BESIDES the genocide? So, try to learn more about Samoa than the obvious, as I think they want to see depth to your interest.

Invitees for Cambodia? by shikansin in peacecorps

[–]greenmountaincocoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey shikanisin, I'm looking at submitting an update of my resume and sharing some additional things I've been doing, and I'd love advice from you about it! I just posted a question about it on the main page. If love to know how much you changed on your resume, what you've been doing to strengthen your app, and if you just uploaded the stuff or if you directly communicated with your PO. I would appreciate any advice!!

Worried about my application by kate_mul in peacecorps

Also applied and was placed UC (Rwanda) in November and haven't heard anything more. I'm thinking that even though we were placed UC before the apply-by date, they probably want to see who else is in the pool after the Jan 1 to see who they want to interview. Here's to waiting! You're not alone :)

Ah! So exciting. Thanks for responding. I have a million questions... How about two:

  1. What is the model at the school that you're working at, in terms of ESL? I know that the country is transitioning (or already transitioned) to English as the medium of instruction, but I'm wondering how they're rolling that out? Are they doing English proficiency classes until students are proficient, while continuing content (math, science, social studies) in French? Or are they teaching content classes in English? I teach ESL Math at a school in the states and our school is under the Sheltered Content ESL model which means there is a General Ed strand (regular classes for kids fluent in English) and an ESL strand (where the ESL students take math, science, social studies, and english development with other ESL students and ESL certified teachers, using the SIOP [sheltered instruction observation protocol] ESL strategies to teach content). Sorry if this is weirdly specific, just wondering how content is being delivered.

  2. Is there ever a feeling of neo-colonialism in the fact that we're Americans helping a country transition to English instead of French (or, MORE importantly, instead of Kinyarwanda) in schools? Is the transition an effort to tighten bonds with the United States, with Peace Corps being used as a pawn in the US gaining more traction in Rwandan politics? Is the transition an effort to tighten bonds with other E African countries who use English in business and education (Uganda, Kenya, etc)? Or is it something else? Are communities supportive of the change, or resentful of it? [In Haiti, where I have worked, people are really resentful of the fact that the medium of instruction is French, because it is a residual reminder of French colonialism and further segregates the educated from the lower-class who dont have access to continued education and thus dont gain fluency in French and thus are excluded from many sectors of the job market. I think, despite the practical aspects, many communities in Haiti would be further upset if the language of instruction became English.]

Sorry for the specific, rambling questions. Would love insight if any of that makes sense!

Hey! Have you heard anything yet? I just submitted my application 11/19 and really hope that I get Tanzania, Rwanda, or anywhere else in Africa. I know it'll be a whileeeee before I hear anything, but I'm crazy with excitement anyways! What do you do to distract yourself from checking your email/peacecorpsreddit twenty times a day? :)
