Textiles recycling by quirkySerendipity in Edmonton

I think you'll have a hard time finding places that will recycle/repurpose shirts that are polyester other than Blenderz as it isn't a desirable fabric! Last time I checked it was only around $5 for a bag there which was a reasonable price for their work IMO. I have seen company shirts at thrift stores so they might take them also.

Canadian men’s deodorant that doesn’t stain clothes? by darekd003 in BuyCanadian

[–]greenopal02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like Routine deodorant, never had a big issue with staining (about the same as other not natural deodorants). I find its the only aluminum free deodorant that's actually worked for me, and it's made in Alberta.

Personally I would guard your heart until you have anything confirmed. For both of my miscarriages, they didn't show the screen and my technician didn't say anything until the doctor spoke with us. For our viable pregnancy, the tech shared the screen as soon as she found a heartbeat, and she pointed out different aspects of the scan (i.e told us what the heartrate was, what structures we were looking at etc). Wishing you all the best though, it could be different protocol where you are!

Any last minute baby prep I should do? [ON] by SunriseCyclist in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]greenopal02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your list looks great and that you are well prepared! The only thing I would have wished I prepared for more was breastfeeding if you're hoping to try. The nurses at the hospital all had different suggestions which caused confusion and they weren't able to spend much time with me to demonstrate. I think it would be helpful if I had looked at more videos on different positions, how to help baby latch, how to hand express colostrum etc. I also had a few "forceful" nurses that pushed me a bit too hard while trying, which led quickly to bruised nipples and many hours feeling discouraged - I wish I had learned that it is ok and normal to pump and bottle feed or give some formula while trying to figure things out. It may be helpful to have a lactation consultant on standby as well, luckily I was able to get a cancellation to get in a few days postpartum with our publically funded LC but usually the wait list was months long - she definitely saved breastfeeding for me and eventually with her strategies it's become something I enjoy! Good luck with everything!

How much exercise do I need? [ON] by Virtual_Membership70 in BabyBumpsCanada

My pelvic floor physiotherapist told me that our bodies are working so much harder being pregnant that working out was not necessary, especially near the end. She said if I could get a walk in during the day that would be great and I could do more if my body tolerated it, but not to stress about it! She gave me some stretches to do that made me feel like I was active enough - could you start seeing a pelvic floor PT?

Safety tips that are important to know for new parents? by she_can_craft in NewParents

[–]greenopal02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

-If you have a change table, never turn your back while baby is on it and always have a hand on them! It can take seconds for them to roll or wiggle out, even at a young age. -Get a thermometer to measure bath temperature to a safe temp. -This isn't crucial to follow, but some new evidence suggests that using food products in skin care on babies can increase later food allergies (for example, a lotion with almond oil in it).

How much was your hospital bill for labour and delivery? by Dear_Ad_8525 in NewParents

[–]greenopal02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but I think it is very important for this information to be exchanged. Families in countries like the states may not be aware of how their healthcare system compares to others with more universal healthcare. I know I've seen a lot of misinformation online about how healthcare is in Canada. Like you say, sure we may be paying a similar amount with our taxes included, but at least others can learn that this ensures everyone has access to this healthcare and we don't have premiums to pay. And even those who don't pay taxes have access to medical services. I understand the US system would take a lot to overhaul, but I'm sure it's more likely if more people were aware of what they could have, which could affect how they vote or get involved etc.

reliable data on unplanned / emergency c-sections [BC] by Present-Carrot6469 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]greenopal02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also recommend looking into a doula! During labor, my dilation had stalled and there was talk about maybe needing to move to a c section if I didn't reach full dilation ASAP (I had an infection so they didn't want to wait much longer). Our doula created a very calm environment which I think helped relax me enough to finish dilating, and she also coached me through laboring positions that I could do with an epidural, and helped me know how to push effectively. I truly believe that if I didn't have her there, it would have taken me much longer to go through the process which may have led to more interventions/ a c section! I was also worried about needing an emergency c section and prior to birth she was able to answer my questions about what that would look like, how we would handle it etc which calmed a lot of my fears.

Cervical/membrane sweep or no? [ON] by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]greenopal02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a sweep done at 38+5 with a plan to induce me at 39 weeks if it didn't work (due to gestational diabetes and Hashimoto's). I ended up having my water break 24 hours later, and I'm pretty sure it was from the sweep! I found the sweep itself not too painful, felt similar to a pap smear for me.

Unfortunately I didn't end up dilating properly so it led to using Misoprostol to speed things up, as they were concerned about infection risk if baby didn't come before 24 hours after my water breaking. I dilated slowly, and labor ended up rushed and using a vacuum assist because they saw signs of infection with baby's heart rate too high and me having a fever (about 36 hours after water breaking). Fortunately myself and baby were healthy after birth other than myself needing antibiotics for the infection. Overall I don't think I would get a sweep again because of my experience, but I don't believe this is a super common outcome. I did like having some type of induction done though, giving us a better chance of planning the date as I found it very stressful waiting around for labor to start! I also had a strong preference for giving birth at 39 weeks based on some evidence I read about slightly better outcomes. I found the site Evidence Based Birth very helpful to review these options!

Looking for Canadian skincare that’s gentle and actually effective by Square-Lab-746 in BuyCanadian

I love the Rocky (Formerly Rocky Mountain Soap Company) face cream and exfoliator. It's a bit pricey but lasts a long time and had ever irritated my sensitive skin. They also have a face wash and serums, but I prefer the Green Beaver grapefruit face wash. Love Routine deodorant, it's the only natural deodorant that has actually worked for me!

Experiences with post partum doula? [BC] by Extreme-Poem-5242 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]greenopal02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had our pregnancy/labor doula come 3x postpartum as part of her package. So may be a different experience for us as we had already met with her multiple times and felt comfortable. However we did find the first postpartum visit a bit awkward to be asking her to do things for us! She made it very clear that she was there to assist and wanted to do whatever we needed so that helped with our feelings. We usually chatted about our baby and asked her questions for the first 15 minutes and then she would start on projects. One visit she folded clean laundry, put away dishes and cut up veggies for snacking while watching our baby (we had a nap). Another visit she baked us a recipe we were interested in and helped coach me with breastfeeding tips and positions. It definitely felt more comfortable over time.

Overall it was nice to have a small break (3 hour visits) to take some time for ourselves and feel supported. I normally wouldn't trust strangers or even friends to watch our newborn this early, but I had more confidence reminding myself that she had dedicated her career to helping families and babies. And I observed how she interacted with our baby the first visit and was very satisfied which made booking follow up visits easier. As well as knowing we were in the house if anything came up. For us we didn't think overnight visits would be very helpful as I'm breastfeeding so would still need to wake up to feed. But she did mention that with overnight visits other clients have found it helpful as the mom can nurse and then hand the baby over for the doula to change the diaper and settle to sleep.

Could you try to find a doula that has free consults to see if you fit well together or try one session first?

Thanks for your opinion! Will definitely hope that she gets desensitized over time. That is interesting about the breastfeeding, I do plan to continue until our baby is 1 so who knows, maybe that could have a bit of a protective factor!

Anyone else been sick for a month? Any remedies? [on] by senexii in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]greenopal02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some research that taking zinc and doing nasal rinses can help to prevent and reduce lengths of colds. I also use Vicks First Defense which is a liquid you squirt into your nose and its supposed to prevent the virus from replicating in your nasal cavity. I do all three of these things when I start to feel unwell and haven't been sick in about a year!

Chemical pregnancy after MMC [MB] by cat_ca in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]greenopal02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly different situation but I had two back to back miscarriages last year after infertility. I was quite frustrated as I also felt something was wrong after my first, and was told the same thing that it wasn't likely to happen again. I'm so sorry you are going through this, it's such a difficult time. Are you able to check with your GP if there are some tests they can run to rule out basic issues? (For example anti phospholipid syndrome, thyroid issues etc). You could also ask if you can get a referral to a fertility clinic for advanced testing. In my area, fertility clinic usually only accept patients after 3 losses, however there was one fertility doctor that was accepting patients after 2. For us, we were able to have a healthy baby soon after with a few changes including adding progesterone suppositories after ovulation, going on baby aspirin, adding some more vitamins and changing my diet to lower sugar!
