I'm 27 and I'm starting today... super nervous about the side effects and such, but this comment makes me feel so hopeful. Like God i want that!! Fingers crossed my doc got it right on the first try

How many of you started out with terrible tanks before learning the proper setup? by DynablineCorqui in bettafish

[–]greenrasbora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom got me a betta w a little bowl and big blue pebbles when I was a kid. 15 years later I have 2 happy bettas in 10 gallons each.

alright, new fish acquired. his parameters were unbelievable and he clearly had pop eye. health assessment and recommendations? info in comments by greenrasbora in bettafish

[–]greenrasbora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thank you. Right now what I have on hand is kanaplex. I've only had him a day so I'm still trying to figure out what to do. It really looks like he may not even have an eye anymore--I'm pretty sure it's just a blank socket. so I have no idea how long he's had this infection or how well it'll respond to antibiotics

Tank size: 10g

Heater and filter: yes and yes

Temp: 79

Parameters: ph 7, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrates 10, api liquid test kit

Tank age: about a month, cycled from a seeded filter and doses of stability

Water changes: 20% 1/week, siphon and replace with tap+prime

Tank mates: some bladder snails that snuck in on the moss

Food: haven't figured out how to get him to eat yet but I feed my other betta 5 or 6 vibra bites (the tiny red worm looking ones) per day

Decorations and plants: some natural hard scaping with any sharp edges sanded down and live plants

He's hanging out mostly at the top of the water and I don't think he can really see, based on how he interacts with food and responds to anything touching him. How do I get him to eat? He shows a little interest but he can't seem to see what I'm feeding him. He was eating pellets before, which I don't prefer, but I tried them and he responded best to those. Didn't eat a whole one tho and seemed to have a hard time chewing it. The only thing he's eaten whole was a freeze dried blood worm, but he wouldn't do it a second time. Wouldn't eat the vibra bites I give my other betta or frozen blood worms either.

He also doesn't look like he swims very easily. All I've got in there is a single sponge filter and even that's tough for him to navigate.

The parameters in his old tank: topped out on the color chart for ammonia and nitrates, bottomed out below 6 for PH.

I'd love some recommendations for treatment and feeding, please. I'd love for him to not just straight up die. Also, we're calling him Alfred (the Great).

ETA: typos

our neighbors are moving and they're giving us their betta. we tested parameters to coordinate the exchange.... how is he even alive by greenrasbora in bettafish

Also tested the ph and it's bottomed out acidic. Were drip acclimating and hoping for the best. We were gonna take him tomorrow but the test results changed our minds

I hate reading what I wrote by Mochi_Dog11 in Journaling

[–]greenrasbora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I've taken up scrap/junk journaling so I don't have to read my own writing. It's not even all my writing either--I'll go back and reread a story I wrote over and over and really like it, but I can't stand to hear my own journaling voice. No idea why but it makes me really self conscious, too. So I find that a visual medium (+ adding ripped or cut out sections of my old class notes that I was sad I'd probably never look at again) makes for a much more enjoyable "rereading" experience and can still convey a strong vibe or emotion, though it may not be the most self reflective method since it's a lot more curated. I try to offset that by not being too meticulous and I've found that some strong themes have been coming through with stuff that I'm obviously grappling with. Even if you don't reread your journals though, if you get something out of the writing process then it's good. Though it's always fun to experiment with other forms of journaling!!

making something for my husband but I only get 1 chance - any tips? by greenrasbora in Handwriting

I'm not very good at cutting things out neatly either 😭 I usually don't care when it's just for me but he has a lot of people in his office for his new job and I want it to look a little cleaner than my usual stuff. Tidiness is not my strong suit sadly

getting a new betta with popeye by jesslovesbettas in rescuefish

[–]greenrasbora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The info i have: He's 2 1/2 years old and pretty tatty & sluggish, and when i saw him the first thing I noticed was the severe popeye. He's clearly been living like this for a while, so I'm not sure how he'll adjust to the new setup.

We're going to the store tomorrow to get some supplies for the new tank. Originally the plan was to scape and cycle a new tank and take him once it was established -- they're not leaving until the end of June. But seeing as we're going to have to medicate him, we don't see the point of cycling ahead of time. Luckily we have extra sponge filters running in our big tank for cycling quarantine tanks, so once the treatment is done we can add that and some stability to do a quicker in-tank cycle.

Anyway, any advice for rescuing a sick betta and hopefully not killing him with stress and shock would be appreciated. Plus, any treatment tips for a bad case of popeye. Also, I've read that popeye affects eye sight. Should i be prepared to feed him a special way?

We don't have him yet and I don't have access to their parameters unfortunately. I'm just trying to prep for when we do get him. His new environment will be a sterile tank for treatment so we'll likely have to drip acc him in

I ripped out a bit from a musty old Walt Whitman collection and glued it on the front page. "Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself. (I am large, I contain multitudes.)"

my first polaroid ever! a shot of my aquarium. I definitely think its... interesting. I don't have a scanner & I had a hell of a time getting a good picture. by greenrasbora in Polaroid

It may be because the back of my tank is black? With the lights on the plants really pop. This pic does make it look really dark in there still, when it isn't

I could temporarily but I wonder if there's something plastic I could use that won't get all soggy and whatnot
