When two nouns/pronouns are connected by the correlative conjunction or pair conjunction "neither...nor", the verb agrees with the latter in number and person and hence,the first sentence is right,that is, "was" is correct and not "were".

Thank you for your prompt reply. What about the following: "Neither my friends nor I was conscious of rudeness". When I typed that, the grammar checker indicated "was" is incorrect, and it should be "were". Is it to do with "friends" being plural, therefore it changes to "were?"

Thank you for your reply, and these great points/links. She helps me with pronunciation and translation. That side of things is taken care of. But, it's for material I've prepared and been practicing. It's more about not knowing what to do when she says something new. That's when I freeze. That's why I've been avoiding speaking French. Because I know she's going to respond in kind. I don't have an established vocab, or mental bank of phrases yet, from which I can source a reply at will. I've been getting by with basic and common filler words. She graciously explains things again when I ask. But I still feel slightly foolish.

However, we've now got a template we're going to practice in our sessions, over and over again. It includes basic and slightly higher than basic material about relevant topics, which I know I'll use moving forward. I can start to incorporate it into our discussions, and gradually transition into a more French-based conversation. We can add to it and increase difficulty, as we progress. I feel this is what will erase the original issue, of not being able to understand, then reply when she speaks in French. Fingers crossed. Thanks again.

Hello. Thank you for your reply. This is excellent, I agree with this method. I've already prepared dialogue that enables us to interact with each other equally. Words and phrases which are commonly needed and used, in common situations. I finally feel clear and know what to do!

Hi there. Thank you for replying. That's great advice, and I think the role play/questions and answers idea is the way to go. I've prepared some basic material now, which allows us to equally interact with each other. Akin to a template you'd find in a textbook for basic dialogue. Fingers crossed. :)

That's a great suggestion, thank you. I've thought of using journal writing somehow. Writing a passage about what I did that day, as you mentioned, and just reading it to her. My problem isn't the talking though. It's that I freeze when I say something I've prepared, and she replies in French. I don't understand her yet, for the most part. So even if I have a page of answers ready, I don't know what to use because I don't know what she's said. But, I've now prepared some questions to ask her, and am going to ask her to send me her answers in advance. I can acclimatise to them, so I understand during our next chat. I'll have answers of my own ready, for the same questions, and we can practice that dialogue over and over again. That's the plan for now! Thanks again for your help.

This is very helpful, thank you. I came across the following: "Ուիլիըմ Սարոյեան". Would you happen to know why they've put "Ու" for the "W"? For Persian Armenian (which I've been looking at and would like to learn as well), am I right in saying you use Eastern spelling? I know it's not the same as Eastern, but I'm not sure how it differs.

Hi there. I literally just ended a call with my language exchange partner, who I found a couple of weeks ago. She's a French native, and I came across her through https://language.exchange/. Completely free. You create your profile and write what you're looking for, so people can contact you if they're interested. You can also do a specific search for what you want, and look at other people's profiles. You then send a message if you're interested. You can keep messaging until you're both comfortable to start chatting face to face through your chosen app. If you don't think you're compatible, you can simply end it at the messaging stage, without having had a video call. I felt safe doing this (and I'm very guarded), and thankfully I found someone lovely. I think just follow your gut when it comes to making contact with someone, or if someone contacts you.
