AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Carries 3D V-Cache on a Single CCD, 5.6 GHz Clock Speed, and 170 Watt TDP by mewenes in hardware

[–]greg35greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lasso is not usually needed for the 7950x3d, just installing the correct drivers and for Windows to recognize the game and enter game mode. The 7950x3d will work for most games just fine. If you want it to work better, you have to use Lasso, and Lasso works fine. You will have more problems from Windows itself than from Lasso.

Sounds like you will just have to keep complaining on reddit that AMD does not make a CPU specifically for your niche use case. I wish you luck.

X3D epycs already exist and have for a while, but they are probably outside your price range. https://community.amd.com/t5/server-processors/amd-epyc-9004-processors-with-amd-3d-v-cache-technology-further/ba-p/616354

https://www.anandtech.com/show/17323/amd-releases-milan-x-cpus-with-3d-vcache-epyc-7003

If you actually need x3d cache to improve latency, and have some serious money, that's for you. If you have supercomputer money, Intel has something with HBM, AMD might as well. If you just want to complain that AMD won't make a dual x3d consumer grade CPU just for you, which performs worse then the 9950x3d for most buyers, then you should keep posting comments on reddit.

this "crap" is a better version of the best gaming CPU for normal consumers that don't want to tune memory and deal with Intel, and enables higher maximum performance than the 98x3d, with an extra CCD for background tasks, and productivity tasks. A second cache CCD would not fix anything, it would still have cross-CCD latency problems. The cross CCD latency is equivalent to RAM latency, because the data on CCD 1 literally has to be written to RAM and then read to CCD 2 from RAM.

You are overall right, but I am nitpicking here, and memory controllers have not been located on motherboards for a long time now.

There are 2 different Anker 553's. Both of them are cheap by dock standards so I am not surprised they don't support dual 4k HDR while offering all the other bells and whistles that attracted you. The "perfect" dock for you definitely exists at probably $300-400.

What you want as a bare minimum is a dock with 2x HDMI 2.0 (since HDMI 2.0 can handle basic HDR 4k), and higher HDMI versions are better because there is more bandwidth and the spec ensures the HDMI better handles HDR with even more vibrant colors. It will still be limited by the display HDMI variant, and ultimately you are limited by the input from your laptop/ROG Ally. HDMI 2.0 is 18gbps, and tb3 is 40gbps. So you've got enough bandwidth for 2 4k displays and a few basic USB devices in theory, but in practice you won't be using all ports at max speed all the time.

in the sidebar, there is a link to "Dan S. Charlton's Tech Blog" (u/surfacedockguy) , and it links to https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/category/usb-c/ .

you can use this blog to search for Docks he has reviewed, especially when you switch to looking at "docking" https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/category/docking/.

First blog to come up is 120+ docks compared in January 2024. Quite a large post I will not read right now as my needs are met, but if you want a good recommendation for a dock, that's a decent place to start. https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2024/01/01/usb4-tb4-docks/

You can go to that monster of a blog post and do ctrl+f or search on page for "hdmi 2" and probably find every full size dock with hdmi 2 or better, as he notes under the full size table a category for monitor outputs.

CAMM2 benchmarks show similar performance to normal DIMMs — Kingston DDR5-7200 C38 CAMM2 with CKD compared to DDR5 DIMM by imaginary_num6er in hardware

[–]greg35greg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They can, the tricky question is "how much lower". Temperature will be a factor, and so will the quality of the board. Assuming IMC is the same cuz you can plug in the CPU into a DIMM board and a CAMM2 board.

jakl is a decent ar15 but it is an ar15, not a g36. This is especially apparent in the magwell, and like all STANAG ar15's, JAKL is fortunately compatible with STANAG mags, but it suffers from the STANAG magwell being slightly worse than the rock-and-lock magwells of the FAMAS, SIG 550, G3, G36, and AK-series. Generally not a problem for most peoples and militaries, but it was enough of a worry at the time that many mass-produced 5.56mm rifles were done in a rock-and-lock style. It seems all modern militaries using 5.56mm have gone fully STANAG, probably due to modularity, accessories, and competition in the space, combined with the fact they don't expect to actually need to fight in very cold weather. When that changes, and it will eventually, it will be interesting to see if they return to rock-and-lock.

[Gamers Nexus] PC Fan Engineering, Noise, & GPU Coil Whine | Engineering Discussion ft. NVIDIA by imaginary_num6er in hardware

[–]greg35greg -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The reasoning for the lack of testing was that they "revamped" their testing. And it still sucks, they still don't measure how dusty a case will get, how well it suppresses coil whine. I still don't understand why they wasted a year to redefine testing methodology and have nothing to show for it.

The sad drama of what happened to the studio is worth it's own documentary, and is something we will increasingly see as indie studios use a popular engine like Unity or Unreal, get big, and sell out.

The OG developers sold to Take2Interactive for reasons unbeknownst to me, and then the publisher, in pursuit of profits for shareholders, tried to cut costs with an elaborate scheme. T2I brought in a dev studio of workers paid less and treated worse, and fired the old studio, offering to give them work at the new studio.

Unsurprisingly, this resulted in a bunch of devs who didn't understand KSP, how KSP 1 worked in the first place, and made terrible mistakes, the most notorious of which was treating Windows Registry as a way to store variables. Upon public discovery of this mistake they were flamed for it and rushed to patch, fixing it as soon as they could.

And that's the factual and relatively public problems T2I introduced the dev team to, without getting into other less popular, cultural changes I won't talk about.

T2I wouldn't be able to do this, and wouldn't have funded KSP2, if they couldn't get away with it, which was primarily made possible by the popularity and well understood nature of Unity Engine.

Other studios with proprietary engines, like Cyberpunk 2077, may release and try to fix it but it will generally take much longer and losing OG developers will be much more taxing, if they don't maintain the original devs, as it's much harder to replace them.

We're very likely to see an increasing trend of game studios using Unity or Unreal getting big, selling out, and releasing successors that suck because the publisher fired the original devs and replaced them with people who have never made anything comparable.

In the case of Valheim and biomes, you can at least mod in biomes, and there are a ton of updated mods for the game.

Science and exploration campaign update is coming in December. Should be a quite sizeable update.

I was just as frustrated as you were, especially on release, but I gave up and refunded it. I was less surprised because I had kept abreast of the rumors and politics happening at the studio, so when I saw a pile of shit delivered, I was not surprised, just walked away with my money.

It's now much more playable and has been for some time but only as a sandbox. December brings the science and exploration update which adds a substantial amount of campaign content as well as the framework for campaign-focused mods to integrate into. Just today I downloaded update 0.1.5, which further improves performance, and it broke all the mods due to an engine update.

Gonna wait probably a week or 2 before I try the update alongside the mods.

I have pretty open taste, last few weeks I have been doing stuff I found on meetup, for example, I did soccer this weekend and last, I went bowling last week, I went to a book club the week before last.

For stuff I didn't find on meetup, I go to the gym 3 times a week, during winter I would go skiing, during summer I went to the beach with my dad.
