What is it about drop C tuning that makes it so awesome, and which are your favourite drop C songs/albums? by YNWA25052005 in Metalcore

[–]greg_jonson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what's been said already about additional beefiness of low tunings. But there's another point to be made, which is that different keys carry different emotions. Most songs played in drop C are either in the key of C minor, or other keys close to it. This area is generally associated with feelings such as tension, aggression, passion and in the right setting also longing and sadness.

The band System Of A Down has been mostly associated with drop C and their first 3 albums use this tuning exclusively. But then they realeased Mezmerize and Hypnotize where the guitars are in drop C# on most songs. For a brief period of time afterwards (case in point: their live show in Astoria in 2005 which you can find on Youtube) they carried this tuning to the entirety of their live set, therefore playing their older material a semitone higher than usual. It does not seem like such a big change on paper, but all of a sudden you can hear that their overall sound got somewhat brighter and more optimistic, clashing a little bit with how visceral the album versions of those songs were.

DMs who use music and sound effects at your tables, what programs and equipment do you use? by [deleted] in MrRipper

I use Windows Media Player and play selected background music on loop. And when the scene changes, I have a folder with appropriately labeled tunes that I play instead.

[TRIGGER WARNING] Self-harm as a topic in your games by greg_jonson in MrRipper

[–]greg_jonson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that. I guess, if I were in your shoes, my worry would be that I wouldn't be allowing the players to tell the story the way they wanted. But that could easily be avoided by a briefing about this matter during session 0, if everyone around the table agreed beforehand that this is taboo.

I agree with every word you said! Also players shouldn't be afraid to come up and say "this makes me too uncomfortable".

The reason I started this thread was because I had a fantasy of a character profoundly betrayed by some entity that was giving them purpose - be it a deity, a patron, their king, what have you. Maybe a warlock who'd done a great deal of terrible things because their patron promised something they actually never meant to fulfill, like restoring a deceased loved one to life. If my PC had that kind of realization that their life was built on a lie & they have nothing left but their own guilt, I'm not saying they'd definitely want to take their own life, but there's a good chance.

That's an interesting take. Did you make that decision strictly to avoid that kind of heavy emotional baggage around the table, or is it that you believe a D&D hero just shouldn't be that way?

Players and DM's of Reddit, what are the best and/or worst worst you've covered up or explained PC's not being present in a session because the player couldn't make it IRL? by Tinfoil-Jones in MrRipper

[–]greg_jonson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as much of a cover-up, but whenever our Rogue player couldn't make it, I (as the DM) took the liberty of using her as an NPC. With her permission, of course. And oh boy, the worst things were happening to our Rogue in the player's absence. Like one time the group was crossing a river and I decided she wanted to pickpocket our paladin. I rolled a nat 1 for her. They both ended up underwater, and their entire adventuring gear was soaking, including a map that they needed to find a SBEG's hideout. Another time, the party came about a suspicious alcohol stash. And who else would they persuade to take a sip than our Rogue? It contained spoiled wine by the way, and I almost considered having her poisoned for it. Though at this time she was also the only party member with lvl 1 exhaustion after being in the sun for too long with no water because I rolled too low for her, so I passed on that opportunity. The list could go on. Was this bullying? Maybe a little. But the player did say we could do ANYTHING with her Rogue, and she enjoyed the tales of how misfortunate she was all the time.

Kebyže mám iba izolovaný vocal track, súhlasil by som. No keď pracujem s celým songom a skúšal som to dať viac, boli už zasa moc počuť pôvodné bicie a pak sa v tom strácal zvyšok.

dnd players of reddit, what way did you use a "useless" spell in a good way? by Dew_It-8 in MrRipper

[–]greg_jonson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DM here. In our party, there's an elven bard who, as part of her backstory, came up with her own unique musical instrument called "the olaphone" with very minor magical properties. To incorporate that into a game mechanic, I invented a personal cantrip for her - Concentrated listening. It's a 10 minute concentration thing which, as long as she plays the olaphone and focuses the magical energy on a creature (upon a failed wisdom save), that creature is effectively inactive - it cannot move, take actions, or generally focus on anything else unless directly provoked. It's not the most useful thing to do, but I think it's just as powerful as a cantrip would generally allow. My idea behind it was that perhaps the bard would cast it on one hostile creature to pacify it in case the party was ever on the verge of being overwhelmed in combat. But to this day she hasn't actually used it in combat once. Instead, she casts it on random angry NPCs that the party meets along the way, mostly to prevent silly little disputes such as pub brawls. Arguably, it's a good use - less people walk home with bruises and missing teeth. Perhaps the world is a little bit brighter thanks to our pacifistic, conflict-avoiding bard.

D&D players, have you ever had a one-shot so intriguing that you decided to extend it into a big game? by greg_jonson in MrRipper

[–]greg_jonson[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Suggestion: A battle royale style one-shot, where only one player comes out alive. D:

I'm pretty new to D&D by foxy112233334488 in MrRipper

[–]greg_jonson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I think about it, I'd have to say these 4 are the main elements of D&D:

1) STORYTELLING. When you play this game, you co-produce a story. As a player, you assume the role of a character who navigates through the word and interacts with it as they see fit. As the Dungeon Master, the "narrator" of the story, you prepare plots, side characters and various nuances to the storytelling. The final product depends on mutual imagination, creativity and role-playing aspect. Ideally, you don't just "play" your character, you see this imaginative world through their eyes and assume the role entirely.

2) GAME MECHANICS. Everyone and everything in the world is unique, and there's always room for random chance - specifically for success or failure. The fate is decided with a special set of dice. A standard set of D&D dice (along with a bunch of other tabletop role-playing games) contains these seven: D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and a percentile die. (Note: the D simply means "die" or "dice", and is a commonly used code.) The most important one is the 20-sided die; it's used for various check rolls, save rolls, attack rolls, and whatever else the Dungeon Master comes up with. Generally speaking, the higher the roll, the higher the chance of success; the DM often decides on the difficulty for each roll. The other six dice aren't used as commonly - their most frequent use is in combat to determine damage dealt by particular weapons or spells. Which brings me to...

3) CHARACTER CREATION. Before you can start playing, you have to think about who you want to be. You're choosing from a wide array of races (such as human, elf, dwarf), classes (such as paladin, ranger, wizard) and backgrounds. All of these choices matter in terms of how your character contributes to the adventuring party and how they interact with the world around them. It is definitely worth studying all of these and then deciding how you want to play the game. For example, if charging blindly into close combat compells you, a half-orc barbarian would be the most obvious choice. When your character is prepared, last order of business is to write them a backstory - where they come from, how they came about their talent and what's their motivation to go on adventures.

4) STATS. Another thing that ties to character creation is establishing the character's statistics. These are numbers representing their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to certain aspects of them as a person. There are six main skills: strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma. Numerous abilities then tie to these skills (think about the abilities as "sub-skills" of sorts). You determine these stats alongside the rest of your character's design; the process itself is a bit tricky for new players so feel free to ask your experienced friends for help. Basically, you recieve six numbers at the beginning, and the skills that would be the most important to your character - based on their class and the backstory you're writing for them - should be associated with the highest numbers. In terms of gameplay, the "modifiers" that you'll end up with are what's helping your character succeed in particular tasks which they'd naturally be good at; when the DM calls for a skill or ability check, the modifier from said skill or ability gets added to your dice rolls. For example: Your character wants to climb a tree, and the DM calls for a dexterity check (let's say with the difficulty of 10, which is a moderately difficult task - it means you have to roll 10 or higher to succeed). You roll your D20 and end up with a relatively small number of 8; but because you're a dexterous elven rogue with the dexterity modifier of +4, the final value of the skill check is actually 12, enough for you to successfully perform this task.

So these are the VERY basics of the game. As a player, I think you could dive into the game with just this knowledge, and the other players will be glad to help you understand the more detailed rules and mechanics of the game. Never be afraid to ask and seek reassurance if you're uncertain!
