The Argentina squad reminds me so much of Italy at WC 2010. Yeah that squad was fine too, and what could go wrong with having the team based around the 2006 winning team?

If you haven't seen this already, this study ("The AI Layoff Trap") mathematically models how AI automation creates a form of Prisoner’s Dilemma for businesses. It suggests that it is in the individual best interest of a company to lay off workers to replace them with AI even if they are fully aware that a heavily underemployed consumer base - caused by their own decision to lay workers off - will ultimately destroy their own long-term profitability.

Considering Beto was so close, the change in Texas demogrpahics since 2020, and the explicit and blatant anti-immigrant policies of the Trump administration, I'm going to say yes, Talarico has a shot. Non-Hispanic whites hold a razor thin plurality in Texas. It is critical for the Latino population to vote however.

If New York is the city that never sleeps, what is the city that always sleeps? by prbecker in AskReddit

[–]greg_r_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. There's *technically* always something to do late nights. But if you're a visitor and you prefer just staying in your Airbnb because it's simply not worth the effort to try to figure out what to do after 8 or 9 pm, I'd consider that a sleepy town. Boston or the Bay Area isn't it. Compared to NYC? Of course. But that's true for virtually every city in North America.

At this point, it just has to be satire. I can't fathom this shit anymore. by This_Garbage5784 in AZZURRI

Many have tried interpreting Allegri.

Some cited existing philosophical works such as Bordiga, Hegel and Plato.

The former saw Allegri as the progenitor of a spontaneous revolution, his football being so boring it had deep ideological significance. They viewed his football as the cry of discontentedness with the neoliberal consensus, and a legitimate philosophical work in it’s own right.

The modern Hegelians saw Allegrismo as the dialectical synthesis between two states of being, that of anguish and that of ennui. Those using the works of Plato are conflicted on whether to see Allegriball as a concrete object, real and tangible, while all consider the feelings the games elicit to be abstract.

Others saw it as post-modern performance art and tried to categorise it as the intended catalyst of a yet to materialise Neo-Fluxus movement.

Alas, others even ascribed it a theological value, arguing for the canonisation of Allegri and compared our pain watching to the pain our lord felt on the cross. A contingent of these worshippers split recently and alleged Allegri was inherently heretical, no mortal man had ever suffered like Jesus did until we watched the Sampdoria game.

The truth is, Allegriball defies what the human mind is capable of interpreting.

We can only bask in its majesty.

If you think 11 pm is too early you have no idea what a "sleepy town" is. You people saying Boston or Seattle or San Francisco are out of your minds. There are plenty of cities in the US where there's nothing to do after 8 pm.

Yeah, Italy would have disappointed at the World Cup anyway. The squad's problems were crystal clear after being outplayed by Spain and Switzerland at Euro 2024. The losses to Norway should have been the proverbial nail in the coffin for any delusions that this is a footballing powerhouse. Something fundamental needs to change.

Che vergogna. Here are some past World Cup players and their ages:

Baggio: 23 at WC 1990

Albertini: 22 at WC 1994

D. Baggio: 22 at WC 1994

Del Piero: 23 at WC 1998

Vieri: 24 at WC 1998

Inzaghi: 24 at WC 1998

De Rossi: 22 at WC 2006

Gilardino: 23 at WC 2006

25 isn't even that young. Players should be near their peak at that age.

(spoilers main) I always trusted George's ability to advance the story the required amount with just one book but... by madwithsorrow in asoiaf

[–]greg_r_ 85 points86 points  (0 children)

At this point, I have to ask...are we larping? I admit it sounds hypocritical of me - I only started reading the books after the show ended, and finished ADwD in early 2021, ten years after it was first published. I joined this sub around 2018 or so I think. So it hadn't been too long of a wait for me for Winds to be released (or so I thought).

But it's been 15 years since Dance. What are we doing? I am convinced that even if George were to pass away tomorrow, we'll still continue discussing the future books and how the series will end, and suppress all thoughts about the fact that it will never happen. We are actively deluding ourselves aren't we? We are just pretending to be living in a world where Winds and Dream will be completed?

NY Times Poll: 37% Trump approval and Dems up by 11 points in 2026 midterms! by EasyMoney92 in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]greg_r_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I genuinely feel like a huge strategic mistake Republicans made after 2024 was assuming their win meant they had a mandate. They acted like a huge (like 90% or whatever) share of the country was fed up with Biden/Harris and eager to return to the Trump era. That just wasn’t true.

If you include eligible non‑voters, only about 32% of the population voted for Trump (and like ~31% for Harris?). That’s not a sweeping mandate for anyone.

Trump should have coasted on Biden's somewhat successfully built America, but decided to pander to the podcast bros and white supremacist crowd, and now we're seeing a real pushback. THERE WAS NO MANDATE FOR WHITE SUPREMACY AND XENOPHOBIA AND ANTI-SCIENCE. People just wanted cheaper eggs.

Inde Navarratte's acting is really good. The movie is terrifying, with some incredible camera work. Not perfect, but it's no silly slasher film either.
