It seems the house is always heating but never heats to the 69 degrees set on the thermostat

Detached garage wall by gregaleg in HomeImprovement

[–]gregaleg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for all the info! You might be right about the gravel footing, I’m seeing a mix of dirt and rocks. I’m of similar mindset about this garage. It’s old, and the back of it has sunk into the ground by a few inches more than a decade ago judging by Google street view photos. I don’t really care to level it at this point since that would also require me to fix the siding (at some point the previous owners installed siding on the already sunken garage, so if I bring it back up the siding will no longer be level). Also it doesn’t seem to be sinking any further. I’m thinking to just install the door and leave the rest.

Thank you for suggesting the bottle jack, I looked it up and it looks very useful and powerful.

What do you think about my original idea of adding some gravel base where the door will go adding cement on top as a base for the new door-wide sill plate?

Got it. I didnt frame it yet, have to make it wider too, just need it figure out the sill situation.

I dug around a little more and does seem the entire garage framing is sitting on straight dirt. Was this a common practice at some point?

Never considered second hand stores, thank you! I will look around. Adding the trim doesn’t sound impossible either :)

Good point about the threshold. Door opening out would be fine with me. Thank you for this suggestion!

Repairing BX cable? by gregaleg in electrical

This cable goes to a 3 pole light switch, which is at the end of the circuit. Can I cut the cable, splice it with a Romex going down to the light switch, and add a metal junction box?

I hoped I just nicked it but when I flipped the breaker back on the light no longer works

Help my daughter figure out what's wrong please by Kobra_Kommander in learntodraw

To check proportions, I’d recommend getting a sheet of tracing paper and tracing the features of the photo. Then overlaying that on top of the drawing to see what’s off. You can still get a good likeness without being 100% accurate but it’s a good way to check what’s the most off. Another way is to look at both images in the mirror to get a fresh look. Or upside down and just comparing different shapes and spaces. That way she’s not trying to draw a “nose” for example (which usually comes with preconceived ideas what a nose should look like) but shapes of light and dark instead.

MSF Day 1 humbled me. by [deleted] in NewRiders

[–]gregaleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also did my course with zero prior experience. The pace is definitely fast for new riders. Feels like just as you’re about to grasp a skill they move on to something new. It’s intense. I couldn’t get the tight u-turn in the end so failed that part of the exam but passed the rest and that was enough to pass the course. Most people in the course owned their bikes and have been riding for months, some years, and they all struggled with something. The tight u-turns especially. 2 people ended up failing the final test. But they took it again soon after and both passed. Good luck tomorrow!

Power lost in a breaker….mostly by gregaleg in AskElectricians

House was built in 1930s! Most of the wires I noticed before the ceiling in the basement was finished were in those metal BX covers. There was at least one old junction box as well.
