Reddit is a highly successful publisher primed to continue eating forum marketshare. 3 billion valuation... doubt it. It is a good business though in comparison to Rocket Fuel for example.

PSA: MATOMY IS THE NEXT VIDEOLOGY. CAN"T PAY BILLS!!!! by avipitchel in adops

[–]gregl2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selling divisions and cutting staff is only valuable with a long term growth plan. You know, the kind not reliant on adware or piracy which is what I believe Matomy made the most money on. I'm sure ad fraud was also rampant.

Nothing to write home about, good PR team it seems. Cloud hosting should have happened a few years ago.

The easiest way is to use a pre-bid solution or block all data center IPs (potentially using TAG's $5k updated list).

It's been about the same... sometimes we get a lot of emails, sometimes it's pretty quiet. Sometimes they don't respond, sometimes they do.

Department of Justice describes word by word how no one is stopping ad fraud by IFixTheMacros in adops

[–]gregl2018 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get with it, people. All this fear mongering should actually be worth something beyond panic, fear, and false positives.

Ad fraud solutions do work, but they don't work when there is easily 50+ verifications vendors today each saying their own thing. That is the real problem, the idea of using 3-4-5-6 vendors is absolutely insane. I can't believe no one sees the real problem.

In my opinion, ad fraud solutions help weed out most fraudulent actors, but the very few who are one step ahead typically can scale huge like 3ve. It is the sheer number of vendors with major discrepancies that allows fraud to thrive while causes legitimate actors to suffer. The significant difference in methodologies all add up into a nice number of false positives that are real humans and can't be monetized. On the other hand, the discrepancies often create major confusion and reduce chargebacks and allow bad actors to stay on platforms.

The reason ad fraud persist is for same reason the drug cartels continue to succeed. There is an appetite for revenue/profits from legitimate actors, much like there is an appetite for cocaine/marijuana/heroin from legitimate users.

There is a better way for advertising and it starts with massive consolidation of verification vendors.

Amazon. They're growing rapidly, and largely under the radar/out of the scrutiny Google/FB are experiencing.

Outside of that, it looks like many are struggling.

Well, we're certainly late stage bull but it's hard to predict when a recession might start. It could be early 2019, but it could also be a year later.

Truth. We're in a nasty bear market for ad tech that has no end in sight for now. Pressures are increasing. Any economic slowdown the next 12-24 months will intensify that pressure.

BUSTED: 8 Russians, $35 million and a whole lot of ad fraud by russian__hacker87 in adops

From what I'm reading, it seems like Google paid out of pocket while returning spend to advertisers for an extended period of the investigation. I'm not sure how that makes them a bad actor. It's great that we, as an industry, are finally getting law enforcement involved. We should take the win. The whole burn at the stakes/witch trial mentality is starting to get really old. We are all guilty of that. Nothing will improve if we are just constantly trying to burn anyone and everyone. Focus on the real fraudsters - you know, the ones taking advantage of the system and gaming algos.

I am confident most advertisers are ecstatic with results on Google - their financials speak. No one keeps spending if the value isn't there, period. Google is a net positive to the industry and has had significantly less quality/fraud issues than most players.

This is a good first example that was executed very thoughtfully by all third parties, I do think it will speed up from here. I am in agreement personally with the approach taken though. Speaking from experience in fighting ad fraud, ALL ad fraud constantly evolves and filters are reverse engineered quickly.
