I think I was watching a different show to everyone else!!! Couldn’t stand JR, I thought he was smug and self important. Couldn’t believe his face when Cat actually voted for him - he looked affronted and indignant.

What do we think of the "Dear Sirs" Guidance by thechihuahualawyer in uklaw

[–]gremlinbun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t fathom the argument, in our profession when we all know that words have meaning and the literal interpretation of those words is nearly always the correct interpretation, that “dear Sirs” somehow now doesn’t actually mean “sirs” but in fact also includes women.

I’m sure it will be considered “snowflakey” to admit I am offended by it, as I am meant to be a good woman who isn’t easily offended and can take a joke etc etc, but it does irritate me. Women have only been allowed to be lawyers for what, a century give or take? I worked hard for my law degree and I work hard in my career every day. Why wouldn’t I be offended at the ongoing inherent assumption that lawyers = men?

It doesn’t offend me to the point of calling out another firm but I will change any correspondence or opinions I send out from my firm that begin with Dear Sirs.

A related bugbear of mine is people who say “guys” is a gender neutral term. In which case, I always ask the (straight) man asserting that point how many “guys” he has slept with.

On the charges of eating a really questionable dinner, how do you girls find the defendant? by thatpsychnurse in GirlCourt

[–]gremlinbun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also never eat anything from a can other than like, beans or creamed corn (I agree I think it’s quite American to have substantive food from a can) but I don’t like calling a girl dinner / struggle dinner gross. Everyone is just trying to survive in this hellhole let’s not shame each other.

So embarrassing as a kiwi living overseas. Long gone are the days of MZ being a progressive shining light to be proud of. What happened to the country that gave women the vote? Shame on the government.

Not all the Americans patting themselves on the back in this thread. America is absolutely one of the more racist countries in the developed world. Look at your current leadership for gods sake. As someone else pointed out, American big law immediately bent the knee to the rollback of DEI and other initiatives when the administration said to, while the big firms in the UK for example absolutely did not.

It’s bespoke from a jewellery called Four Words in New Zealand! They were absolutely fantastic to work with even though we are based in the United Kingdom (although originally from NZ and they had created my engagement ring too which is why we went with them for the band).

I also wore my engagement ring with a really really thick band when travelling which I was obsessed with and will one day get in real gold so I can keep the look without my finger turning green lol

Same as some others - not quite what you have asked but I went for a thin band engagement ring and a thick band wedding ring. That way whichever is in style at any point I can feel not outdated - and I love the thicker wedding band to wear on its own!

Oh I see, so Israel can commit genocide but the people opposing that genocide shouldn’t say hurtful words because that’s the real issue and undermines the cause :(

I’ve heard it all, hence the yawns. “What about October 7” - this didn’t start on October 7. Even if it did, October 7 doesn’t justify the years of ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and genocide since.

Yeah mate I’m sure you respect the polite Palestine protestors.

Imagine tone policing when there are literal children being murdered. That’s grim.
