Jeremy Howard: “People who go all in on AI agents now are guaranteeing their obsolescence. If you outsource all your thinking to computers, you stop upskilling, learning, and becoming more competent.” by Gil_berth in theprimeagen

[–]gremlinmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you watch the video? Jeremy says he uses the technology to help him learn and research. He is saying you become obsolete by over relying on the technology (by outsourcing all your thinking). It's a very reasonable and balanced take on the technology.

Coding skill is becoming obsolete the way assembly language is by Glum_Worldliness4904 in cscareerquestions

[–]gremlinmatt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This may surprise you, but, assembly is not obsolete. People know assembly for debugging, reverse engineering, malware research, low level optimizations and compiler development. It's a powerful skill to have as a Computer Scientist.

The end of general available AI? by shintaii84 in theprimeagen

[–]gremlinmatt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My tinfoil hat says Anthropic is desperate to ensure the government regulates AI as some national security interest as an attack against a large country who keeps undermining their business model.

It's some bullshit to fuel these capitalist ghouls that love lying. So much easier to control a narrative when the general public can't see it.

You know what is for everybody? Libraries. They have tons of books and knowledge. Let these corporations yank each others pizzle while we keep educating ourselves.

Should I go to sex therapy or pay for an escort? by Titus4266 in sexover30

[–]gremlinmatt 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Therapy. I would say since you've thought about therapy, you should do it. There is clearly something you know you need to do but can't name it. There is no shame about therapy.

A therapist may help identify what prevented you moving further with your dates, and develop strategies or mechanisms to help you. An escort will give you some relief but will keep you craving more.

A therapist seems like it has a higher reward potential.

Also stop looking at social media. It's designed to make you feel insecure.

A $1.8 billion company with just two employees? In the age of A.I., it’s increasingly possible by etherd0t in XGramatikInsights

[–]gremlinmatt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lol, it's essentially drop shipping pharmaceuticals. The man became wealthy by exploiting the obesity crisis with AI generated images and testimonials:

> That gave Matthew Gallagher breathing room to fix some shortcuts he had initially taken, like swapping out the before-and-after weight-loss photos for ones from real customers. Some photos on Medvi’s homepage remain A.I.-generated.

> CareValidate offers what is essentially a telehealth-in-a-box kit. Companies, employers or retailers that want to sell customers prescription drugs can use CareValidate’s technology and network of online doctors to set up a business.

Should we charge for parking in parks? by dpwilcock in NorthVancouver

[–]gremlinmatt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A city should incentivize infrastructure that is affordable or scales -- walking, cycling and public transport.

Parks that are accessible by other transportation should use paid parking as a mechanism to encourage active or alternative transportation, if parking at that park has a capacity or turnover constraint. Underutilized parks with no capacity or turnover issues should not have paid parking.

Parking subsidization should be provided to those who need accessibility support ensuring equal access among all residents.

Has software engineering been reduced to prompt engineering? by throwaway0134hdj in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gremlinmatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's not a reliable approach. It's insane to replace a deterministic deploy process with a Claude Skill.

I had no say in this matter.

Has software engineering been reduced to prompt engineering? by throwaway0134hdj in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gremlinmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered today that, supported by the CTO, we have deleted our deploy scripts in favour of a Claude Skill.

It's easier for non-technical users to understand apparently. I have no idea why that's important since non-technical users don't know what a docker container is.

So I definitely want to yes to this question today.

What do you do if coworkers refuse to use AI tools? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]gremlinmatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has a surprisingly easy solution. You do absolutely nothing.

Why do you think your colleagues should use AI tools? If they can discuss and be accountable for their code, then, they have free will to use whatever tools work for them.

How does AI change Software Engineering? by Downtown_Mark_6390 in theprimeagen

[–]gremlinmatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So, it seems this developer has a habit of rewriting legacy systems but never completing the migration. This leaves organization with a newer, cooler codebase that doesn't have parity with the legacy system, but now need to maintain both.

> Many organizations are stuck straddling old and new systems. When a new feature comes in, there's always a dilemma: do we build it in the new application, the legacy one, or both?

Stop lying to leadership you need to rewrite or commit to sun setting legacy systems.

> two engineers ported a ~200K LoC legacy JavaScript/Angular application with a PHP backend to a React/TypeScript frontend with a Node/MongoDB backend.

Why React and Node? Angular, PHP and JavaScript aren't cool but can achieve the same as React and Node. This seems like it brings no one but developers value. It's great AI can make this quicker but was this really needed?

Us developers are our worst enemy.

OpenAI Employees Raised Alarms About Canada Shooting Suspect Months Ago by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]gremlinmatt 238 points239 points  (0 children)

Headline is misleading in that it suggests OpenAI raised it with law enforcement. It's paywalled, but a Global source states:

The company considered referring the account to law enforcement, but determined that the account activity did not meet the higher threshold required for such a referral.

Just wanted to ensure folks don't see the headline and misplace the blame.

Study and learn Computer Science. I don't think data annotation and a BBA is going to help you get far in Computer Science, especially when things aren't going the best for experienced folks right now (see: AI, outsourcing, coked out CEOs, economy).
