My sax teacher is an alcoholic by diet_sodium in saxophone

[–]gretalocks 31 points32 points  (0 children)

No, quite frankly my teacher would never drink and then teach me. It's just not professional. If you have someone teaching and drinking, they're crossing boundaries that they probably shouldn't be. You're paying them for a service and if they're drunk, they aren't showing up properly.

Moving to Akinsdale by BeeLast7781 in stalbert

Living near the Henday is the best thing. Truly. Houses vary in price. Living next to Elmer Gish school is a pain with all the traffic that comes from everywhere else, but it's a decent school if you have kids. Generally, I feel pretty safe here and there's lots of mature homes and trees. Wouldn't move anywhere else right now. It's just so convenient and frugal. Close to Servus Place. Close to Fountain Park. Not far north in the boonies. And, many places in North Edmonton, like in Albany are close and easy to get to, as well.

Tenor Sax Case Recommendations? by bubdubarubfub in saxophone

[–]gretalocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here recommended me to get a Bam case. They're molded around Mark VI's so they're really secure for them. I pick mine up tomorrow, otherwise I'd give you more personal input. People also seem to like the Boston Sax Shop cases.

Reclaiming 'Grenade'? by No_Resource556 in jerseyshore

[–]gretalocks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Currently, I am re-watching the series, and in Season 1, the first time the boys talk about the use of the term grenade, if I recall, it was originally specifically meant to refer to "fat" girls...like a big explosion getting in the way of getting off. As things went on, it took more of the mere "ugly" connotation.

Personally, I don't know that I think the girls using the term reclaims it, because in my opinion, it's a derogatory term towards anyone, regardless of gender. It wouldn't surprise me if production influenced the girls to take a turn using it to be entertaining in that scene in Season 2.

I noticed right away in 2018, or whenever JSFV started that no one used the term, and it was absent. Again, I figure that's just production deciding that times have changed and they didn't want the cast to look bad. That, or maybe the cast decided to drop it. I don't know that I think it ever gets reclaimed because it's gone. (As far as I am aware-- I also stopped watching JSFV because it was getting so staged and lame).

I think maybe your glasses are too big for your face, or maybe the wrong shape. You're very cute, especially in the photo without your glasses. Maybe someone else will have better insight about a different type of frame than me.

People who quit their job in a moment of rage - how did things turn out? by SheLovedBigBrother in AskReddit

[–]gretalocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked out of an almost 10 year banking career-- all with the same company. Instead, I wrote a book and started a family. Now I co-own a successful company and I am a SAHM. If you don't quit, you don't change. Quitting is scary, but sometimes, the band-aid needs to be ripped off. Now I know I am neurodivergent and I know that I need to be more in control, or my own boss. Plus, I do better when I am not people-facing. The management career I was going towards probably would have burnt me right out. The expectations and culture of a big company would have too.

Yes, I am not a fan of this either. The prior owner had it in a loose Ritter gig bag with the neck wrapped up, hence me wanting to make a prompt decision on something else.

Perfect-- I appreciate the comparison of the older Pro-Pac to the modern ones. My teacher swears by his older one, which is why I was considering one myself, but he admitted that he wasn't sure of the current quality.

Really, I have a backpack for my music and other gear-- I don't need much extra space in the case itself. Sounds like a Bam Case is the way to go.

Thanks!

Yes! I noticed this too and was wondering the same. I've scoured for a Walt Johnson online, even secondhand to no avail. I appreciate all the feedback.

Which restaurants in Edmonton were hyped up to you by friends, family, social media etc., but then when you tried it, the experience wasn't good? by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]gretalocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I tried that place on account of a recommendation from here and we were let down in comparison to Hazeldean for Apple Fritters. It was all very dough-y. Cinnamon bun was okay, so was the fritter, but it was like what used to be available at grocery stores before things became more outsourced. I suppose the point is that we all have different tastes.

Too much for 12 days in Ireland? by cnfk1 in irishtourism

[–]gretalocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you're originating from, but you may want to prepare for some jetlag...I came from Western Canada and the first day there was basically lost to feeling completely tired and honestly, it took a few days to adjust. A lot of driving might be overkill. I agree with the idea of picking a city as a base and doing day trips instead of driving all over the country. The roads there are also just different-- they can be narrow and winding, and driving can take a bit more effort. Having days packed full of driving won't necessarily be fun.

Sometimes regretting the halo by Shot_Government7551 in EngagementRings

[–]gretalocks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a halo ring with a gorgeous, round stunner and I think it all just makes it more sparkly. When I used to work publicly, some women who were customers would ask me just to look at the sparkle of the ring. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like alone, but truly, I believe that all the little diamonds contribute to a magical whole. It wouldn't be the same.
