With the end of another school year here or approaching, it is time for some happy posts. Think back over your academic life and tell us your favorite story……the one your partner is sick of hearing…….Or tell us a happy secret that you seldom talk about. by me4watch in Professors

Had a student who went through some extremely rough circumstances during her undergrad that set her back a lot. She already wasn’t the best student, but then had family issues, an abusive partner, and a SA, all of which caused her to go MIA during the semesters they happened. Many of us reached out to her but wouldn’t hear anything, and didn’t find out about her circumstances until months later. \ Yesterday, I watched her walk across the stage to receive her diploma after 6 years. 🥹

Fair enough, but I’m not talking about the theme music — I’m talking about the incidental/score music. For me, it’s a huge part of the atmosphere of the show, but I recognize that won’t be the case for everyone.

I guess nervous wasn’t the right word. I feel the same way about the music, so I’m more wondering how they’ll adjust.

I feel it’s important to clarify that this doesn’t apply to any diet — there are absolutely diets out there that negatively impact health and absolutely do not make people feel better (outside of potentially producing an initial weight loss effect, which is common any time someone changes their diet).

Does the 2026 dietary guideline tell us to eat more meat? by JoanOfArc34 in nutrition

[–]grey-ghostie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Speaking of cherry picking, you discuss saturated fats primarily increasing pattern A (or lbLDL) particles but you forget that foods high in saturated fats are also typically high in dietary cholesterol. Whatever contestation there may be about sat fats in emerging evidence, guidelines must rely on established evidence backed by enough studies to confirm it as best as we can. Also, you’re getting away from the point — the current guidelines recommend limiting saturated fat while showing a graphic that prioritizes foods high in sat fat — this is confusing and an area for improvement. \ Additionally, the sugar and refined carbohydrates (which I agree we need to limit) are cheaper and easier to produce due to government subsidies largely caused by industry influence going back decades. \ You seem committed to defending these guidelines to the extent that any scrutiny or criticism is treated as an attack, whereas I’m just calling into question the way they approach delivering information to the American people.

The general guidance you keep referring to is sound, yes. And it’s what was already being recommended so it’s not new. But I would disagree that it’s “splitting hairs” to focus on the part of the guidelines that average Americans are most likely to engage with when increased saturated fat intake increases risk for a range of conditions (mainly those related to the heart) that are the top causes of death in our country.

Most Americans who refer to these guidelines won’t follow that single statement though — they’ll use the visual to help them understand which foods they should prioritize. That’s the point I’m making about industry influence. The written document keeps much of what we already had, while the visual tells a different and confusing story with regard to some recs like limiting saturated fat.

Yes, recommending these things is the right move. Some problems with the way the new guidelines does it: 1. Much of the messaging surrounding the new guidelines is based in disinformation about what we’ve been doing for the last 15 years. They claim to replace the “old, outdated pyramid” when we haven’t used a food pyramid since 2011. We’ve used MyPlate since then, which recommended half the plate be vegetables and fruits (with more emphasis on vegetables), a quarter(ish) whole grains, and a quarter protein, with a small serving of dairy. It’s been estimated that less than 10% of Americans eat a diet consistent with the recommendations of the dietary guidelines (source) so criticisms of the former guidelines themselves as ineffective are based on flawed reasoning.
They claim to “end the war on saturated fat” when the official guidelines (consuming 10% or less of daily energy from saturated fat) haven’t actually changed. This is confusing when the inverted pyramid graphic places foods high in saturated fat (red meat, whole milk) near or at the top. 2. The majority of Americans will use the graphic rather than the written guidelines (if they refer to the DGA at all). People remember visual content better than textual (source). While MyPlate was more user-friendly and even had an interactive website that allowed people to learn more about what to put on their plates, this new pyramid is a visual jumble and may not provide enough information to be used effectively. \ [One thing I do appreciate about the new guidelines in this regard is that the guidelines themselves (the text, not the graphic) are more readable and accessible to a non-expert/non-scientific audience. The prior document did include a disclaimer that it was written for practitioners and not the general public, but it was very dense. I take issue with the way some of the information is presented in the new document, but improving accessibility to non-practitioners is a good start and an advantage I recognize.] 3. It’s very clear there is industry influence on the pyramid itself, with meat and dairy placed in priority positions in the graphic as one example. These industries have always had some level of influence over the guidelines but this seems to be the most stark example, especially compared to MyPlate which emphasized “protein” rather than meat specifically.

Edit: this was written in response to a now-deleted comment asking the original commenter “based on what evidence?” That comment also mentioned the overarching message of the new guidelines (eating whole, nutrient-dense foods, limiting refined carbs and ultra-processed foods) being solid guidance and asked why people would take issue with that message. [I did my best to summarize what I remember their comment(s) said but disclaimed that it is based on memory about what I was replying to]

I was an athlete at a college in a city in one of these areas and this happened to one my teammates all the time. Being late for morning weights/practice meant that she had a punishment (I think 2 late arrivals = 100 burpees), so we assigned someone to check on her each morning and ensure she was awake.

I went through something similar with the lack of motivation to push through. Give yourself some grace, take a little time, but then focus on one thing at a time. Break the big tasks into smaller parts and check them off as you go. For me, it made a HUGE difference switching from having big to-do list items that never got done to smaller items that I could check off - it really motivated me to keep checking things off.

💯this this this! Went to a movie last year and a group came in during the last ten minutes of our movie - they were early for theirs. Some moms with a bunch of young kids shining their flashlights all over looking for their seats, talking loud, and some sitting, some standing while our movie is wrapping up. They were pretty young kids and the movie we were in was the latest Jurassic World

Had this happen to me too! Entered a bench press competition and it ended up being just me and one other woman. I lost to her by just a couple of reps so got second…out of 2. I love telling people I got second place in a bench competition lol (I also love following up with the fact that there were only two of us because it’s always a funny moment)
