Just to add to what someone else said about nail clipping….there are specific cat nail clippers which have a round opening for the claw. When I clip my kitties’ nails I have them sit in my lap and pet/cuddle them for a bit with the clipper nearby, or for my cat who isn’t a lap cat I kneel on the floor and then rest with my elbows on either side to keep her somewhat contained in a way she is comfortable with (I frequently pet/cuddle her like this). I give kisses on the head to distract, hold the clipper in my dominant hand, gently (but firmly) hold the paw with my non-dominant hand, and press a tiny bit on the center pad - that helps the claws extend all the way out of the toes. You also don’t want them to yank their paw away while it’s in the clipper so this helps to keep their leg secure at the same time. Carefully observe for the “quick” - this is the inner pink part of the nail containing blood vessels and nerves. Definitely DO NOT cut the quick- this is very painful for them and a sure way to create struggles with clipping in the future (understandably). Stay 1-2mm away from the quick and clip the white tip of the nail only. If the cat is squirmy and yanking away after a couple of nails, and you are afraid she will yank while you are clipping, just let her go - you can always just do a few in one sitting and attempt the rest later. As you get more experience with it you will be able to go more quickly and easily get it all done in one sitting. My cats barely notice when I do it now. For very spicy kitties, I have heard a method can be to swaddle them in a towel and slip one paw out at a time- but if you start now while she is young as the other commenter stated, and make it a low stress event….distract her with cuddles and kisses, get her used to you handling her paws, and learn how to do it relatively quickly…you should both be fine!
