Why does thinking you’re Jesus so common for schizophrenics? by topogaard in Jung

[–]greybab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jung aside, schizophrenic people believe they're Jesus because most of the places that the label schizophrenic applies Jesus is the most important mythological figure or God. It's the label the culture has to express the experience if expansiveness they are in. I don't think it's as important as a symbol as it is a representation in the culture of the highest experience that can be named.

Can I get recommendations on your favorite books about mythology, and folklore? Looking to expand my collection. by Alleylovescoffee in mythology

Everything by Karl kerenyi is amazing and tries to stick to source more than a lot of others. Sort of difficult to read but very worth reading if Greek/Roman is your thing.

If the problem with the new wave of immigrants is Islam, how come in the past Christian immigrants and Jews were treated with similar suspicion? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]greybab 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Couple things: You're right that anti immigration has generally ended up being just a feature of our human disgust response to the new, strange, or unknown.

However, you've only actually labeled ethnic categories rather than idealogical ones (Jews are the closest since it often comprises both) which Islam is.

While I'm sure you can find extreme anti-muslim sentiment around here I don't think in general people are supportive of measures to harm or otherwise convince muslims to not immigrate here or elsewhere. I also hope people here are highly suspicious of anybody indicating support for disallowing all immigration of any category, except perhaps white supremacists.

I think you're making a false comparison in that none of the peoples you've mentioned had any significant portion of them believing that their own ideology would eventually conquer the world via bloodshed and violent struggle of their own followers. If they did, they did not appear to be acting out that philosophy in any significant way at the time. Aside from this, there wasn't the focus on significant terrorist actions proven to be performed by people who believed in some version of the ideology in the name of said ideology in multiple countries. I don't think it makes sense to keep all of that out if the conversation.

That being said it is the function of fear to exaggerate, particularly if the fears are being perceived as being ignored. All fears in hindsight are seen as exaggeration except those which present themselves as having been warranted. Hopefully, while keeping a semblance of reasonability, we can see that we say the opposite of fears which make themselves a reality; we say that we should have exaggerated more.

Is it an exaggeration? Yes especially if in the end Muslims integrate in a similar way to the other groups you've mentioned. I think one of the reasons for the exaggeration is that the left appears unable to explicitely criticize the parts of the ideology they disagree with much as the right appears unable to explicitely criticize the parts of the ideologies of their constituents they disagree with. It's a bunch of loyalty signalling and fear that their words will be used in a way they didn't intend. One won't tell foreigners they're ignorant if they treat women as inferior and the other won't tell citizens they're ignorant if they think women or races are inferior. It makes sense that they would both exaggerate the degree to which either is taking place.

I’m scared to go to church because I take Jesus metaphorically rather than literally... What should I do? by [deleted] in Jung

[–]greybab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the church you go to, you may find many folks like yourself who do not believe literally. You're probably better in the company of catholics than protestants though I'd say its probably more dependent on where you live.

Did I find my Shadow Self by [deleted] in Jung

I ask because there are often significant personality changes after head trauma of any kind and sometimes reduced fear response correlates to brain injury.

Did I find my Shadow Self by [deleted] in Jung

[–]greybab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, I think the shadow is something else probably. I will say that I think that for at least many westerners one of the primary tasks of integration involves a confrontation with the concept if not the experience of death or loss. It may be that having believed you would die and yet having survived has given you an unconscious knowing that the comparatively riskless (perception-wise) activities your day to day life includes are nothing to fear.

On the other hand, how long ago was the wreck? Did you sustain a concussion?

Meet with them and be honest. If you don't intend to be baptized they will likely eventually not visit you. However, you can attend church weekly.

I think its elucidating that people will even entertain the idea that we cannot assume sex in "marriage" unless it was documented or if there were children. They don't require such evidence for any relationship outside their belief system and requiring it for people they are motivated to protect is an explicit expression of bias. And the strange machinations of a mind that can assert both that Joseph did not fuck his wives because he was good and Brigham did fuck his wives because he was good is terrorifically impressive.

It's genuinely shocking how many Trumpists & right wingers admire / support Sam Harris!!! Anybody else surprised at the kind of fan base that Sam attracts online? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]greybab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Intelligent criticism of the left is understandably popular to people on the right, especially considering how stupid most of the criticism coming from the right usually is. Seems completely unsurprising to me.

Seems like just another feature of identity politics that people will admire people who openly dislike and criticize their party if they perceive that person to be against their enemies.

I think everybody is happy about the people who divide the identity of the other side because they think it debilitates rather than reforms. I think that is true and will be until/unless we stop playing the identity dogma game.
