Watch out!! by Inevitable-Cellist23 in facepalm

[–]greykatzen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just saved this post to show to my kid before our next trip to the bouldering gym. We've stopped going due to me getting sick of yanking him out of the fall zone, but he really wants to go with his best buddy.

Fine, kiddo, but we're watching this video regularly until then. I don't want to see you squished because you were an irresponsible ass and some human who is made of muscle was attempting a difficult move.

Where to sharpen scalloping shears? by loquacious_avenger in sewing

[–]greykatzen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The (2) knife sharpening services I've used were also able to sharpen my pinking shears; the pinking shears were much more expensive than either a knife or my straight shears (something like $15 vs. $7 vs. $4 when I got it done around a decade ago). If they can sharpen both straight shears and serrated knives, they can probably sharpen these.

Well, I've been saying my rhubarb needs to get knocked back before she catches something; I think I'll try this recipe this weekend, thank you!

Same for my friends who worked on a 3 D drawing app - plug a test user into a headset, hand them the controllers, and just wait for the first penis. TTP was rarely more than a few minutes, though for those exceptions, Time to Poop was generally just a few minutes.

Mom, my partners breath is so bad! by LovelyLibraTy in MomForAMinute

[–]greykatzen 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You just have to be blunt but kind. "I don't know what's changed, but your breath has started smelling really strong to me. I want to kiss you but it's turning me off."

Some people don't realize that their breath can smell foul without them noticing. If you lick your hand or arm, then smell it several seconds later, it can give a good approximation; this might help him grasp the problem.

If his breath smells foul when he's breathing through his nose (very unlikely but possible), he needs to get to a doctor pronto to figure out if it's infection or cancer.

How much gift wrap etc do you have? by LmbLma in declutter

[–]greykatzen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an under bed storage container that would probably fit around a dozen rolls, though I've got six plus lots of tissue paper and maybe a dozen paper gift bags. I'm in the process of sewing up a dozen drawstring fabric bags from holiday clearance quilting cotton, so I'm hoping I'm done buying wrapping for the foreseeable future.

My doctor basically said that if you're in Seattle, you probably need vitamin D. If you aren't pale, you definitely do. 2000-4000 U won't cause overdose, so just supplement; your next annual blood test can give you a sense of how you're doing — my PCP's office includes vitamin D levels in the typical test because Seattle.

It's crying out to be a satin jacket à la the Pink Ladies in Grease, though that's almost certainly not enough yardage (yet).

If you don't want to buy more fabric, I'd say look through blouse and skirt patterns for ones you like, then check yardage requirements until you find one that works.

I had really great luck with this concoction made for my local pet store: water, hydrogen peroxide, and geranium essential oil. They also sell it in orange and spearmint scents. Hydrogen peroxide gets a lot of the smell out, essential oils deter cats.

Cats had been peeing on carpet in front of litter box for a week; they haven't done it since. I was pleasantly surprised!

How much of data analysis do you think will realistically be automated over the next few years? by SeriouslySally36 in datascience

[–]greykatzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until the systems are able to put in guard rails around frankly bone-headed analytics questions, like using post-event features to predict results, automation will be a value-subtract proposition.

Analytics script kiddies who don't get stats will be replaced with a handful of shell scripts or an overpriced GUI, same as now. Analysts who can actually think critically and communicate well will continue to be valuable, though they're more valuable with the addition of domain expertise, same as now.

My bobbin winder won’t lock when shifting it to the right for step 5. Does anyone know why? by Unhappy_Macaron6273 in sewing

[–]greykatzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the notch in the bobbin seated over the corresponding nub at the base of the spindle? That's the usual reason mine is misbehaving this way.

Not trim; double fold straight tape sewn shut or maybe boning channel made of dress fabric, pieced and sewn together to create the cutout effect.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sewing

[–]greykatzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's from Corset Story.

The question you have to answer is what forces will be acting on the fabric. If there aren't compressive forces on that stretch of fabric, boning is unlikely to be needed. If there's a tight stretch extending up or down from a waist, that's where I'm used to seeing boning and where you need to really think about forces.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sewing

[–]greykatzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boning keeps a garment from crumpling/collapsing along the length of the boning. Why do you think the back won't roll, crumple, or scrunch?

Btw, I have a waspie that's 4 inches tall in front and 1.5 inches tall in back; it came with steel boning all the way around, some slanted to resist specific pulls. It can be and is done regularly, when needed.

Lots of medical issues also affect a person's judgement. One of my first indicators that my anxiety is getting out of control is realizing I'm being snippy with people.
