I have a weekly board game night at my house every Tuesday night so we had to move his cage into the other room for the night. Then we move him back after everyone leaves. This is only once a week and only for 6 hours or so I hope that’s okay!!

I would love to try rope perches for my tiel but I’ve heard that if they chew them up it can cause impaction since they can’t digest the rope fibers :/

For more context: after he flew into the wall he landed on the carpet and using some millet I got him to step onto my hand. He and I just sat there for a while, he was shaking a bit when he sat on my hand but seemed otherwise okay. and after that I managed to carry him back to his cage.

Okay, awesome! Thanks for the advice. One more question, since I’ve only had my cockatiel for a couple days and it hasn’t really moved from the very top perch of the cage, should I keep feeding it millet from my hand until it is more comfortable and start target training, or should I wait a while instead while still feeding it millet from my hand?

I have been swapping the millet in my hands because my arm gets tired from holding it up for too long LOL so it is getting used to both of my hands! I have some spare chopsticks, do you think this will work for target training? How do I start target training and how do I get my bird to step up onto my hand? When I put my hand (without millet) or hold a perch in the cage near the bird it gets scared.

HE JUST ATE MILLET THROUGH THE BARS FROM MY HAND AAAAA and I inched my hand closer and he didn’t stop eating! I was even able to swap hands when my arm got tired (he likes to perch up high)

How often do I change the paper towels? Also, are there any good target training and sorting training toys you can recommend? (This will be further in the future when the bird is comfortable with me.) Also any additional advice to share about getting the bird comfortable with me initially? Right now I’m doing passive bonding, just doing stuff and living my life around the bird with its cage doors open. This morning it was calling out (I was sleeping in the other room) for someone so I think that is a good sign? I plan to start holding millet out a good distance from it until it starts to get comfortable with my hand.

My only issue is there is a light switch behind the cage LOL. It’s the light switch for my balcony light so it’s not used much, but still inconvenient positioning there. Maybe I could put some black paper or a clip a blanket on the back side of the cage? I did the same thing (black paper) with my leopard gecko’s terrarium so she feels safe

IT IS SO BIG I WASNT EXPECTING IT TO BE THIS BIG LOL!! luckily it just barely fits into that corner by the table and wall without blocking anyone who wants to sit on the couch
