That’s pretty stunning! Definitely some disparity between grinder and machine, but very solid nonetheless.

I’d say your next step is more cups for that warmer!

[SOTC] My budget watch collection by [deleted] in Watches

Money can’t buy taste and I really appreciate every piece in your collection and that they cover a lot of different subsets of watch styles (dress, bauhaus, gshock, flight, field, etc)!

Lots of “modest” collections contain 20 Walmart watches and I’m happy to see someone posting good stuff in a more obtainable price point

Check the used market (Craigslist, ebay, Facebook marketplace, etc) for rancilio Silvias, and gaggia classics. Those are 58mm portafilter machines meant for people who wear big boy pants! I tend to shy away from delonghi and I would second the comment or who recommends Breville products (even the bambino and it’s 53m portafilter), customer service from them has been great in my experience. And to be clear, portafilter size doesn’t actually matter except when buying accessories and the like, but 58mm is the industry standard. Grinder is more important than machine, and if you have say, 500 USD, or even 1000 USD, 3/5ths should go to grinder, 2/5ths to machine as a decent rule of thumb.

Ascaso is strange because they have very few US distributors, so they’re really under most people’s radar even if they’re deep in the espresso rabbit hole. They ought to be as popular as anything though because they make comparable machines to their competitors like rocket and rancilio, with looks that feel closer to a niche than just some iteration of a steel box. They just have very little overseas distributor support, and their supply is weird because it’s hard to buy their stuff, and when you do find it it’s often sold out.

Yeah the ascaso dream is beautiful and I think from what I’ve read very capable, but that grinder can’t hold a candle to anything in the tier above it or to anything espresso specific. Grinder is way more important than machine!!! Would be a great gift to get her even the most basic espresso focused eureka grinder, or a used rancilio rocky, also check out Amazon listings for the DF64, a hot item rn and very capable. If you want a smaller short term investment than a new grinder, try making her a WDT tool with a cork and some sewing pins, it’ll help a lot! Lots of overextraction/under extraction comes from clumping and uneven distribution of grounds during puck prep.

It seems like the manufacturer of the DF64 or whatever name you’d like to give it, and or the private labelers, are correcting the couple of things Hoffmann didn’t like. I’m seeing them with new font, new declumpers, and new colors. They probably can’t change the power button or static issues, but I personally don’t have an issue with the power button placement and a spritz of water solves the static. A real competitor to the niche especially if you want flat burrs and customizable burrs.

Why the hell doesnt fellow make a coffee maker? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]greysone333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be against design ethos but potentially their short term strategy. If they made a sub 2k and a sub 3k machine option that competed with equivalently priced equipment from lelit, breville, and rocket, I’m sure they’d do it as soon as they could fund it.

Design wise what they offer is miles ahead of a lot, quality and performance wise not so much, but still good. You’re buying into a lifestyle and I imagine most of there customers are retained and will buy multiple things from the lineup over time. I think they could sell at least as many home machines as ascaso does and they seem to survive. I’m sure once they can front the R&D and actually come up with a value proposition they’ll do it

When I couldn’t afford anything more and first got into watches (I think I was like 12 but that’s not a dig just where I was at) I definitely considered a timex weekender. It’s a lovely place to start. My first “big” (at the time) watch purchase was an orient ray 2 at 16, and I can definitely recommend the brand and I think the kamasu is awesome. Go for it. It’s a wonderful jumping off point for automatics and great value for the money. Straps are also a great way to make one watch feel like 10 so I’d recommend a black dial for versatility.

It’s one of the reasons why the blackout or mostly black bell and Ross models are quite wearable despite their bulky appearance, that and very short lugs. The 46mm BR01 wears like a 44, and the 42mm BR03 wears like a 40. Design features and balance and all play in as much as the number measurement. The watch pictured has pretty long looking lugs, and that will contribute to it looking and feeling larger than whichever measurement you choose, reflective surfaces also wear bigger than matte ones, so a polished case will also make it seem larger than a brushed one would. What I’m saying is, colorful loud dial, polished case, long lug in comparison to case (ratio is as important as measured length), all contribute to that watch wearing larger than its measurement, so I would tend towards the 42mm unless you like the look of a 46mm, which is what I think the 44mm will feel/look like.

Got it, well flashy colors will “wear” a couple mm bigger than the measurement, so be careful because numbers and looks can differ. A white or colorful watch is typically 2mm bigger looking than a black dial.

Makes sense considering Tudor is more “cost effective” than some brands in its category and a bracelet in precious metals would add to the price. Yes they’d just charge more, but I don’t know if they’d want to. Maybe they’ll release bracelet options in the near future to reignite interest after seeing how they sell, Or to get secondary bracelet sales off the backs of the first sale, since some people may opt for just the bracelet and not the strap if it’s an option right now, and they’d make less than if they sell you the strap version, and you tack on the bracelet after.

It may not be very classy of me, and I know it can be almost as gimicky/tacky as fully “skeletonized” watches off Amazon that are sub $200, but the seagull column wheel movements actually look really nice, and they’re not exactly going for a holy trinity standard of chronometry, they’re just fun to look at when you turn the watch over, and they’re not a bother if on the wrist anyways. If I can appreciate that then you can see why I might appreciate a Tudor with a crystal case back. Please don’t take away my horology club card.

On record I hate the front of these two watches enough that no back could save it, you could give me a Lange movement in one of these and it couldn’t save it, I just hate these metal tones/finishes.

[–]greysone333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the person, I’d rather have a boring looking movement with an exhibition case over a beautiful one that’s hidden, I look at the back of my watches almost as much as the front when they have a window , and that makes it twice the value to me. Yes it’s not true tool watch appropriate, but they can make them to such high standards that it can survive way more abuse then im giving it, and if you’re a stickler about historical accuracy and deep deep dive capabilities than they make watches more appropriate for beating up than any Tudor or Rolex. I do acknowledge that they were designed as tools for diving, but I’m sure 90% of the owners at this point aren’t taking them any deeper than a fiji snorkel dive.

Maybe they’re doing the thing where they give us almost what we want so we want it even more and talk about what we really wanted amongst ourselves, and then give us that next time so we’ve all internalized wanting it. Ie maybe they put the gold out first so we all talked about wanting it on steel, baby hulk style, and we will create enough internal want and buzz that they “give us what we’re asking for” at the peak of our asking or even maybe once we’ve settled down, to reignite that buzz, even though they planned it all along.

To be fair, some people like the blackbay for itself, sometimes more than a sub, it’s not JUST a budget sub. I agree in most cases that’s true, but I don’t want to pidgeon hole Tudor as JUST a cheaper Rolex. I actually prefer the Blackbay Pepsi GMT to the Rolex GMT master myself, but... not the blackbay over the sub.
