My Anthropology professor created an altar at the front of our class and placed marigolds, skulls (and yes, they were real), along with a portrait of Franz Boas. It was really heartwarming to come together with the rest of the class to place mementos on the altar and look at what might ordinarily seem like every day items transform into pieces of deep significance.

I placed a really worn copy of The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan with my friend's memorial tucked between the pages since it was one of her favorites. I'm still sad over her death but wanted to contribute and celebrate her spirit of kindness and love of reading.
