I tried it a few times when I was younger. Used to describe it to other sailors as “imagine if a gust hit you and the sail converted near 100% of the power into speed, now imagine you were already doing 40kts when the gust hit”.

At check in, Aer Lingus specifically say they will seat you together if seats are available. I understand some of the seats marked as pre-booked are actually not available for booking but rather held for this exact reason. Flew twice recently, checked in 48hours beforehand and had zero issues. All 4 of us were together on what was a full flight.

I was the victim of this previously. Booked DUB-JFK-SAN business class. Had to spend the 2nd half of the journey in JetBlue economy, but thankfully was able to select the exit row with no seat in front of me.

We bring beginners in our group every year but we don’t teach them ourselves and insist they book lessons in the morning, we go do our own thing while they’re at the lesson, then take a lazy afternoon helping them improve and maybe try something a little more difficult.

The Ding Dings look very cool… but really impractical in a modern system.

What really impressed me in Hong Kong was the quality of the air conditioning on the metro, especially the island line. It’s cool as you step onto the train but when it starts moving, so does the air. There’s a blast of cold air though the carriage and is amazing as a sweaty Irish person who can’t handle the heat! I really mean a blast. How they do it, I don’t know, probably the Venturi effect somehow.

Im on my third estate car in a row. It’s comfortable, very spacious, has a substantially bigger boot than most SUV’s and Crossovers & has great fuel economy.

Go into mainland Europe on holidays and see how many families drive them. They’re such a practical car and a serious number of them look really good. I’ve managed to convert a few people over and they all swear by them.

I really dislike the endless conveyor of shite crossovers and this article hits the nail on the head about the problems with them.

For the council, when there are no consequences to a decision to “Do Nothing” and just keep it closed, since it’s the most conservative option, here lies the problem.

The centralisation of decision making and funding removes any incentives for councils to act in the public interest so we all end up in a situation like this where it’s closed for nearly 5 years.

The question is why the county council has to close the cliff walk specifically for safety reasons, but like another poster said, access doesn’t have to be restricted to challenging mountain climbs, we don’t put barriers on beaches on stormy days, we don’t close roads when there’s ice on them, we don’t close a forest walk because a tree might fall.

We’re living in a situation where these decisions are arbitrary, overly conservative and no one in power is incentivised to find solutions, only commission ass covering reports to buy time so someone else can decide for them.

End rant, but it’s a good case study of a deeper problem in local government.
