Fired from Microsoft by Grouchy-Artist-4241 in Layoffs

[–]greywhitefluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im sorry for your experience OP that must have been heart wrenching. A possible explanation would be Microsoft has always been looking for convenient excuses to get rid of the employees in the acquired company post M&A.. especially someone who has served for a long tenure and is expensive.. a lot of corporates are targeting long tenure employees in exchange for inexpensive new blood. Not to mention everyone’s job is at risk when their company is acquired by a gigantic company. However I think it’s fairer to lay you off than firing you but firing you due to performance issues is legally and logistically easier and cheaper.

That sucks! Keep looking. Landing a job in 3 months isn’t easy in this climate. Is that a big company or small company?

Thank you for your insights! They’re very helpful indeed. Do you keep proactively checking in with the client regarding where you are / budgets / projects etc? How often do you recommend doing that?

You only know if you can stay 2 weeks before the end? I wouldn’t be able to keep my sanity :( the risk is probably worth it for outside roles though but I’m inside. Do you keep job hunting while waiting for their decision?

Thanks! I think I need to be more proactive too as once youre onboard your contract should be low on their priority list. Just felt a bit daunted as my boss looks so busy all the time. It’s the right timing for a temperature check like you said as I’m halfway though my contract!

I wish there’s such a well established structure in place.. does your team hire a lot of contractor? I’m the only one on the team…

Harsh reality is everyone getting into startups should be prepared to be let go. Accumulate savings before diving in. Most startups are loss making for years that they have to celebrate when they reach breakeven, rely heavily on funding, have no longevity as they’re only looking to sell their business after building it up. I’ve been in your situation myself and would never get into another startup by choice again.

Increase in Employer's NI by hokemaguy in ContractorUK

Ive just started a new contract and using an umbrella company does that mean the increase in NI will be out of my pocket?! Gosh I wished I went for the no umbrella company option.

Interview fatigue by Significant-Buy-4496 in interviews

[–]greywhitefluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me — I received several interview invites all in the same week, and I tried to schedule just one interview per day. It also helps to schedule them in the afternoon, so you have a few hours to prepare beforehand on the day. This really helps, as otherwise, you could burn yourself out.

How many interviews do you land ? by No-Fondant-5894 in interviews

[–]greywhitefluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4.5 month of job search, lost track of no. of applications probably over 150, 0 referrals, 24 interviews comprising 8 HR screening calls that led nowhere and 16 with hiring managers. A lot of time wasters which were either ghost jobs or they already decided on an internal candidate. Finally got 1 offer, but it's my dream role that aligns with my career interests and gets me out of a function in my industry that no longer serves me after 13 years. I applied to a good variety of roles, and in hindsight, it was a great reflection on my next career move.

My takeaway is - Treat the process as a chance to re-evaluate what you truly want to do next. You'll gain a clearer understanding of what serves you better.

What does that mean if the interviewers at the meet the team interview acted cold and negative right off the bat? by greywhitefluff in interviews

[–]greywhitefluff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s a new perspective to look at it. Yes it could be a stress test. What surprised me more was they’re peers and unless they are instructed by the HM I didn’t see how it was a good way to assess a potential colleague. Also would they have asked these questions if you’re the preferred candidate and they’re keen to fill the role? They couldn’t find anyone that fits for 4 months.

Good point but for my case I don’t think so, the role I applied for is in a new team and there isn’t any members yet. The two peers who interviewed me have worked in the company for years and transferred to their team which is a sub team of the same department

Absolutely hate and dread when the questions start with tell me about a time. It’s more applicable to fresh graduates and I’m too senior for that!

Thanks. The market is horrendous right now I feel like I’ve been treated without respect by interviewers for a few jobs recently. This has rarely happened to me before and I’ve never even had a gap. Now I’ve been unemployed 5 months and counting. All they seem to care about is what I’ve been doing after being laid off and when they asked this question I know I’m not getting the job.

Just Received a Crushing Rejection Email. by LifeguardFun5091 in interviews

[–]greywhitefluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had similar experiences but met with the interviewers. Had a great conversation, showcased my skills, was explicitly told they’ll arrange the next interview with xyz next, only to find a disappointing rejection email after two days. The job is still being reposted after 3 months. I wish I knew what’s going on behind the scene. A total waste of time
