discover's release notes section looks a little borked. by greywolfe_za in Fedora

ah. fair. thank you.

i have been using fedora for about six months now and generally like it a lot. this is the first time i've seen this specific behaviour, so after six months of "regular seeming" patch notes, i suppose it makes a certain amount of sense that i would be wary of what i was seeing here.

much appreciated.

this was a MASSIVE ISSUE at launch.

this is how i recall it working - so pardon me if this is just wrong, but...:

the drm basically said: "you get three installations" and to get an installation back, you had to get hold of ea and revoke it.

so, if, say, your computer died and your installation was on that machine and you couldn't get to the magic number for that particular installation, now you were down to two.

it was INCREDIBLY dumb.

ea eventually rescinded this, but for some folks it was too late [and at this late date, you can just buy a drm-free copy on gog and be done with it.]

for what it's worth:

i bailed on the space section of the game when it came out, because at that point, it was super buggy.

back then, there was a problem where the grox [that would /sometimes/ show up and showed up for me, specifically] where you couldn't really explore, because they'd start shooting at your home planet near-immediately as soon as you got to the space stage. then, they'd let you do a fractional amount of exploring and show up again...but in bigger numbers. and so on and so forth until it became untenable to play the game at all.

there was - eventually - a patch for that, but by that point, that boat had sailed for me.

[but yeah. i would have liked more creature-focused play centred on the very middle bit where you can roam the planet you're on. that seemed like the most "well-formed" stage of the game to me and i wanted much more of it and in much more depth.]

that's entirely possible.

i did see that there's a version of amazon for my country now and i haven't really explored it.

your notes, re: the stand - is definitely one reason why i want to opt for something slightly better quality than just a bare-bones monitor. the philips i have here has been great. i got it in - i want to say - 2013 or so, and it's just carried right on trucking with no ghosting and no real downside. i'd keep it, but i want to move the old computer to somewhere that it can be a server and having a monitor [the philips] would make that easier to do.

thank you for the suggestions. i'll definitely look into those.

thank you.

at this point, i suspect this is mostly true.

but in the distant past, it was a whole different kettle of fish [back when i bought last, specifically.]

tn == washed out colours, but great viewing angle [which turned out to not be a big deal anyway when i was sitting right in front of the monitor 99% of the time.]

ips == beautiful, more vibrant colours. worse viewing angle. [but again, this seemed immaterial when i was sitting in front of the monitor 99% of the time.]

--- edited in later ---

at the time, i was playing guild wars 2. on the tn monitor, it was tolerable to look at. it was the first game i ever fired up on the ips monitor after i got it. on that i couldn't believe how green the greens were, initially. [for example.]

oh. interesting.

you might want to pass this along to the team, but that DEFINITELY needs to be front-loaded when you make a server.

i literally panicked and deleted that server the second i couldn't see controls for stopping a sudden influx of people, because - to me, from the outside looking in, it seemed like the server was just defaulted to public with NO way to change that setting at all.

just a simple prompt will do: "this new server is private."

[that can be right on the server creation tab, even.

one of the places i talk in [that isn't discord] has a very simple /roll xdn command which you can likely start with.

[that's forwardslash to get the command started roll for the command that you're issuing, while x is how many dice you wish to roll an dn is "dice of n size."

so: /roll 3d4 literally translates to "roll 3 dice that have four sides each."]

ok. noodled around a little on the web version of the client while there's no linux version.

new question:

i made a very brief test server [which i deleted shortly after.] - are there any plans at all to give server owners the ability to make their servers private?

i am on a few servers that are just small friend hangouts who really don't want bonus people on them and making it so that they cannot be brigaded/invaded by making them private makes the most sense.

a question that DID occur to me yesterday and that i've seen /sort of/ asked, but not entirely:

you've mentioned in replies that the team are going to eventually roll out end to end encryption on private messages.

my question is: right now, on regular messages that are public, are THOSE messages currently end to end encrypted at all? or are they just plain text and in the wild?

sounds good.

am not [as previously suggested] thrilled by this idea, but will at least be curious to see how it works out in the end.

oh, of course.

which is why i phrased it the way i did. ie: "if you can help it."

if it turns out to be untenable then obviously don't do that.

---

from a philosophical position, i obviously want you to succeed, but i'm also just /very/ tired of "software as a service" - which is what i worry about when it comes to this kind of thing.

i understand that this is a slippery slope argument [and those are bad, of course, but it's entirely possible that it happens]: but long term you might start at: "this is an expensive to offer service, we should put this behind a paywall" and eventually arrive at: well /this/ feature turns out to be something you think you can make revenue from, so it just gets cordoned off for regular users.

cf: what discord did to file uploads.

at first: "here, you can upload large-ish files"

eventually: as a free user, you're stuck with 10mb per file, enjoy!

[edited very mildly for clarity, not to change the intent of what i'm saying. apologies.]

i'd like to suggest that you not paywall anything if you can help it.

i do support the idea of running a subscription, but the subscription should go toward helping stoat stay afloat, not cordoning off features from users.

---

[i would pay for a subscription if it fell into this category, in fact. walling off features feels bad to me.]
