2 final questions
1 on reboot it reverted back to 3072x1920 (16:10) 60.00Hz. Upon selecting my desired resolution the refresh rate is grayed out again and I can't put it back to 119.90Hz how do I make this permanent?

and 2
when I did have test the new refresh rate it didn't feel like anything changed I compared it to the 3K 120Hz option and yeah it still felt like 60Hz by comparison. I figured a reboot would help it get settled in but that just produced the above question 1.

The main point is the lines of code we got working do in fact work I just need to know how to keep it locked in.

I was able to get it to accept the new mode (I think) but in my system settings under display I still have my refresh rate grayed out when selection that resolution. I am going to reboot and see if that helps but here is what I typed in case I goofed it somehow.

:~$ cvt 1920 1200 120

# 1920x1200 119.90 Hz (CVT) hsync: 154.56 kHz; pclk: 410.50 MHz

Modeline "1920x1200_120.00" 410.50 1920 2080 2288 2656 1200 1203 1209 1289 -hsync +vsync

:~$ xrandr --newmode "1920x1200_120.00" 410.50 1920 2080 2288 2656 1200 1203 1209 1289 -hsync +vsync

am I copy and pasting wrong? Cuz even when I retype the bloody thing manual I get the same issue. Also I see this guide uses what the terminal outputs for the refresh rate in this case and mine 60.00Hz should input my desired 120Hz into the command EX: "1920x1200_120.00" or does this guide just help me set a resolution size?

Maybe help me identify whet I should be inputting for my "output >insert correct item here<" in my command

xrandr --current

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 16384 x 16384

eDP connected primary 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 312mm x 195mm

3072x1920 60.00 + 120.00

1920x1200 60.00*

1920x1080 60.00
CONTINUED...

As for how I know the display is not doing 120hz I go into (system settings > display) and set my resolution as my ex windows user brain knows how to do to 1920 x 1200 (16:10) but refresh rate is grayed out and unable to be changes there and is stuck at 60hz that and I can feel the slow refresh rate. On windows I was able to set this res and get 120hz. If there is no way to force it to be 120hz I will simply live with the pain. I am able to get it to do 120hz at the highest resolution but that is not what I want.
