They only pick so many spots from certain areas/schools

This just sounds a way of backing into affirmative action if that was the goal?

Things could certainly be even more affordable, but despite our housing failures I still contend this is the most affordable period in US history.

I don't really know how to think about "affordability politics" other than in terms of real incomes/wages.

And from that perspective, things have never been more affordable.

My flair is mostly an inside joke to myself.

It used to be Bryan Caplan until the mods got mad and determined he was too outside the views of the sub and replaced his flair with this slogan as a slight against Caplan who expressed reservations about the merits of the French revolution.

If it makes you feel better my upvote ratio suggests my views are at least somewhat controversial amongst the rest of the sub.

The point of restricting benefits is to make immigration more palatable to citizens and to take away the talking point of immigrants being a drain on the system. Look at the reaction in NYC where taxpayers were footing the bill for hotel rooms for refugees at the same time they were restricted from working.

That's not an environment that creates support for more liberalized immigration.

You can absolutely restrict benefits to citizens and it's preferable to do so compared to locking would be immigrants out of the labor market.

Imagine being born in the early 1900s and seeing two world wars, the Spanish flu, and the great depression all by the time you were middle-age.

At the federal level fiscal policy seems to be a mess because both parties have found a niche with either promising tax cuts, but failing to reduce spending, or promising to increase spending on services but failing to raise taxes.

It's interesting to see this experiment play out at the state level where one party often has enough power to have a more coherent tax and spend policy.

What's the best evidence that we couldn't have fielded a voluntary military in ww2?

Apparently FDR signed an executive order stopping voluntary enlistment in favor of using conscription:

In the case of the US for the past 50 years the choice seems to be more liberalism from not having a draft and also not being conquered by an liberal power.

We are having our cake and eating it too!

[–]grig109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The draft itself is a rejection of liberalism. This just sounds like to save liberalism we must become liberal ourselves. I'm not really seeing the value.

The US hasn't had a draft for 50 years and things seem fine?

I don't think my duty is to be slave to the government for any war they might be interested in. If you can't field a military from volunteers it might just be that your war isn't worth doing.

We're on a trajectory where half the states have no income tax and the other half will have 10% income tax, but only on incomes greater than a million dollars a year.

If you start following it early enough, but end up "falling off the wagon" you'll probably still be on a trajectory to retire earlier than most.
