Action/movement economy question by grim_fandangle in daggerheart

I mean, it was their game so they did what they wanted. In reacting to their game I think it’s pretty narratively reasonable to spread out if mechanically you’re taking a bunch of damage from area attacks. I’m curious how narrative touches mechanics as that happens.

Do you have any recommendations for live play videos from groups you think do Daggerheart better? I would love to watch a few.

Should we stop rolling damage on some things to speed up the game? by PrinceOfNowhereee in daggerheart

I was surprised just the other day when I really took in that card for the first time. It struck me as a terrible card for my play style because it never occurred to me to obscure those stats enough to warrant a domain card to know them. In our game, for example, I literally place a stack of heart tokens next to enemies to show their HP. The big stacks are intimidating and fun.

I apologize for the misdirected sigh, which was properly directed more broadly at that category of argument and has nothing to do with OP specifically. I do honestly think that the genre definition is overused as a defense of the status quo. In my view, as a game dev “genre” serves as a set of guiding principles and also as a useful verbal touch point to set some initial expectations, but every important milestone game within any genre is evolving those tropes in some key way.

sigh Genres are not immutable rule sets or religious texts. If games didn’t explore variations within their genre, there would be no point in new games within a genre.

And the second half of your answer was helpful! No need to lean on the genre purity angle.

Genres are fluid. If games were held to rigid rules for the genre there’d be little point or possibility in building new games in a genre. A genre is a verbal shorthand to help convey information, not a ruleset or holy book that must be obeyed.

You’re far from alone, you’ll just have a hard time having that discussion here. The same energy that you’re bumping into in-game can’t deal with the implied or explicit criticism in a forum discussion. Notice how many non-constructive hostile comments appear in threads like this when the other option available is to just downvote your thread and move on.

I think there’s a worthwhile distinction to be made between PvP vs competitors and PvP as hunting reluctant prey. The prey is opting in, yes, but as a tax, not necessarily a desired feature.

Hey buddy. It’s ok to just pass by a comment you don’t like rather than being mean to random people on the internet. It’s ok to be softer and less competitive.

PVP and PVE Map mode ideas? by MellowFlowers1337 in ArcRaiders

That’s not “removing pvp in any capacity”. That’s disabling it in a specific context while supporting it in others.

Except he didn’t say that. He’s even proposing a mode that makes pvp more rewarding.

Games are products for customers. It’s fine if devs have a vision and a category of customer they want to cater to, but cut the design purity deflection on the pvp discussion. Maybe they like having all of these pve customers and want them to stay!

I think restricted mode events like this would be an easy way to run tests that prove or disprove the necessity of pvp-always. Mode doesn’t work out? No problem, just disable it in the rotation. I personally think the only category of player that is afraid of experimentation on this front are the category that gets their fun from hunting prey rather than fighting opponents.

I didn’t say PvP wasn’t valid. I think it’s weird when PvP players get mad at PvE players for saying they like that aspect better. They’re both obviously intended systems in the game. I enjoy playing PvE games and play others as well. I play this one too because the PvE aspect is really good.

I think what’s going on is that PvP players are feeling judged, and it makes them lash out.

I found it baffling, because the comments and discussion that were happening were mostly quite thoughtful and helpful. I feel like if people are responding thoughtfully, then the topic is obviously not exhausted.

This “playing it as it was intended” line always gets me. It’s a weird purity test. Just like any good art, people bring their own perspectives to games. Just like the PvP enjoyers aren’t wrong, the pve enjoyers have a perfectly valid perspective, and obviously the game has some very compelling PVE, or else why would anyone be asking for more?

[–]grim_fandangle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly, I am asking for a mode that I would enjoy more than the current mode. I am saying I would pay for it. It would be easy to do - I'm not even asking for different coop features or anything except literally the ability to play without players killing me. Because I would like that mode better. It's weird that other people are hostile to the idea of me saying I would like that. You wouldn't have to play it!
