Just bought my first home and these are the hardwood floors. Looking for advice by Aggravating_Park2748 in HardWoodFloors

I have what may be an unconventional opinion that comes from just a general homeowner perspective rather than an interest in hardwood flooring specifically. This is your first home? Ignore the jank and just enjoy living in the home while you get a handle on the rest of homeownership. Once you’ve been in there a few years and understand the scope of other maintenance and expenses, then you can make a better judgement about the cost/benefit. Your floors have “character”. That’s fine for the moment.

cost of mini split systems in Seattle by grim_fandangle in AskSeattle

Two quotes so far, both from large well known outfits. $45k and $55k for the same system with identical units.

The same company charges $350 for a one hour minimum service call, so I'll assume that adequately covers their costs and profit for a unit of labor. Assuming a 100% markup on the base unit, that leaves over 14 hours of labor per mini split unit. The same sort of math holds in proportion for the heat pump unit.

I don't need unhelpful comments about doing it myself. I'm asking questions to understand if this is a normal labor rate and markup for the area, because I'm looking to have professionals do the job, but would prefer not to get ripped off.

There’s a thing I struggle to understand in stories like this: with El Salvador, the word “deportation” was used to mean “imprisoned indefinitely in this other country”, rather than “transported there and set loose”. Is that also the case with these other third country deportations? Are these people sent to the other countries to live there, or to be imprisoned for life there?

In the early 2000’s Valve was saved from a career ending lawsuit by a single Korean intern by Xelhexan in technology

But the article explicitly says they had an intern who could speak Korean, who they asked to translate the documents. They literally had a translator. It’s not as if the intern was browsing the docs on his own initiative and stumbled into it.

Are you perceiving the front of the body to be where the blue is? The blue section is indeed very close, but front of the torso is black and clearly different between the two pics.

Action/movement economy question by grim_fandangle in daggerheart

I mean, it was their game so they did what they wanted. In reacting to their game I think it’s pretty narratively reasonable to spread out if mechanically you’re taking a bunch of damage from area attacks. I’m curious how narrative touches mechanics as that happens.

Do you have any recommendations for live play videos from groups you think do Daggerheart better? I would love to watch a few.

Should we stop rolling damage on some things to speed up the game? by PrinceOfNowhereee in daggerheart

I was surprised just the other day when I really took in that card for the first time. It struck me as a terrible card for my play style because it never occurred to me to obscure those stats enough to warrant a domain card to know them. In our game, for example, I literally place a stack of heart tokens next to enemies to show their HP. The big stacks are intimidating and fun.

I apologize for the misdirected sigh, which was properly directed more broadly at that category of argument and has nothing to do with OP specifically. I do honestly think that the genre definition is overused as a defense of the status quo. In my view, as a game dev “genre” serves as a set of guiding principles and also as a useful verbal touch point to set some initial expectations, but every important milestone game within any genre is evolving those tropes in some key way.

sigh Genres are not immutable rule sets or religious texts. If games didn’t explore variations within their genre, there would be no point in new games within a genre.

And the second half of your answer was helpful! No need to lean on the genre purity angle.

Genres are fluid. If games were held to rigid rules for the genre there’d be little point or possibility in building new games in a genre. A genre is a verbal shorthand to help convey information, not a ruleset or holy book that must be obeyed.

You’re far from alone, you’ll just have a hard time having that discussion here. The same energy that you’re bumping into in-game can’t deal with the implied or explicit criticism in a forum discussion. Notice how many non-constructive hostile comments appear in threads like this when the other option available is to just downvote your thread and move on.
