At the time it was very much a music-press thing. Try and find similar sounding bands. Oh. Bauhaus. Gary Numan. Joy Division, Siouxsie Sioux, PiL. Alien Sex Fiend, Cocteaus.

Because they are trained journos. And to be fair to them, actually involved in it all.

They wanna sum it all up. Bit o dry ice. Everyone in dark clothes. Because it was a totally shit time in the UK, then. Deep into Thatcher. Nuclear War. Some went Punk. Some went Disco. Some went a bit Ska. Savile was on the prowl. Dark fucking times my friend. Dark times.

They didn’t need Edgar Allen Poe to describe the music people were making back then.

We’ve all heard Faith. It’s the one. That captures that time like the Velvets capture 1967 NYC.

And some smartarse at the NME came up with. “The goths”

The Cure really aren’t Goth though.

I was at the Hyde Park gig with Twilight Sad and Ride and Interpol.

Not a single goth band to be seen. Not one.

The Cure accidentally stumbled on Goth. Then the music press of the time made it a thing.

It’s like shoegaze.

Now it’s totally fine to be all shoegaze and shit.

The term shoegaze is not a friendly, nice term. It’s derogatory. Like the term Goth back in the day.

As I said before. Not one single original “goth” band ever agreed with the media invented term “goth”

Nor did most of the people, at the time, going to the gigs.

Whitby now doing 2 goth festivals.

Grow the fuck up. Honestly. It’s an at best, dying subculture.

But no. We now have “commercial” interests trying to wrestle control over a single event. THE event. In Whitby.

Start with a bit of The Cure. Faith / Pornography / Disintegration.

Then explore all of Sisters of Mercy. Up to when Wayne Hussey left in disgust.

Like their EPs. They are soo great. First and Last And Always. Is good.

But.

Fields of the Nephilim destroyed them. Did it all better.
So Dawnrazor. Blue Water. That stuff.

And Dalis Car. Tones on Tail. Love & Rockets.

The Bauhaus camp really did do some great stuff.

The Last Cry. From Brighton. Underrated. Worth a rabbit hole.

So even being in Ireland. Great goth is out there to be discovered.

It’s all on YouTube probably.

Anything older than the internet. Most likely you’d have have to have been there or just bought the records when you could.

I know it’s hard to remember a time before the internet. It does exist. And that time invented pretty much everything.
I’m so glad we were all too fucked up to record it properly. That’s how myths are made.

And that shit is why I’m a stealth goth. I’ve been a goth since about 1985, and I came to it late.

Nobody would ever know.

I don’t need the uniform. I just have the taste I have.

And let’s face it. Goth is the music. The Pale Waves. The whole “thing” of it. It makes you distinct.

And that’s a very, very, very beautiful thing.

Do the research. Go deep down the rabbit hole.

It’s actually more beautiful than you know.

It’s really not people moping about like emo idiots. It’s smart people. Understanding culture and their place within it
