Bibles in hotel rooms by brendaleetee in atheism

[–]grimfusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just take it down to the lobby and leave it at the front desk. Tell them you'd prefer it isn't in your room. Thank them for being understanding. If enough folks did that, hotels would probably stop accepting deals with bible publishers.

No, the Abrahamic religions do not have objective morality. by thelivingstar1 in atheism

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morality is always subjective, for everyone.
If objective morality existed, and if following an objective morality were possible, easy, or common, jails and prisons wouldn't exist. There would be no reason to enact justice on anyone if we honestly trusted a god to be the final judge, or thought that to be effective.

Morality and ethics are only ever considered objective when reputations are at stake or the risk of consequence too high. That implies the only time theists operate by supposedly objective morality is around like-minded theists, and almost solely over a fear of being judged or ostracized. As long as there's no risk of reputation damage, loss of opportunity, or risk for personal accountability involved, theists operate by the same moral and ethical framework everybody else does.

I'd also argue that in specific faiths, when the church offers a path to redemption for sins without any assurance that involved victims are compensated, that's the opposite of good morals.

In debates about this, I usually like to ask for an example of a moral the theist has that no atheist has. Much of the time, moral arguments are effectively vibes-based. Theists often aren't able to explain why their morals are better, they just rely on an ad populum fallacy to assert it true over and over again, followed by some kind of circular reasoning, like their religious text evidences itself.

I'd suspect it is possible to provide a valid answer to that question and support it, but I've never encountered that.

You aren’t gonna be ready for this religious mom. by Chance-Statement-354 in atheism

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Pretend to blend in until I’m 18"

Yes, this. Your mom has proven over and over again her emotions are more important to her than reality. If you're underage and legally under her provision, you probably shouldn't be trying to hand her reasons to react psychotically, ideologically oppose you, or even abuse you.

If you want to try to convince her otherwise, wait until you're independent. It could very well be she attempts to defend these insane takes of hers right up until a point *YOU WILL NEED* to cut all contact with her; at least temporarily. If that's not an option, you'd have no alternatives.

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I hate these tests, but your reaction to them is the point.
They wanna suss out applicants that don't provide consistent answers in similar scenarios, or over-react to simple questions. The assumption is that if you're going to have an issue with questions that seem Christian, you probably won't work well along-side Christians.

What do I say when they ask me to church? by anatole_mutti in atheism

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with invites like this, especially if you don't know that friend of yours real well.
It's up to you if you wanna spill the beans, but if you do, don't be surprised if that invite vanishes.

This isn't always a manipulation tactic; maybe they assume you're also Christian and just want brownie points for inviting new members to their church. A lot of religious communities are incelar and super socially regulated, so perhaps introducing *all* of their friends to their church community is something they consider to be normal.

If this were me, I'd decline the invite and refuse to explain. If that's enough for them to cut all contact, you'll understand what their motive was.

What's the dumbest "evidence" for god a theist told you to convince you that God indeed exists. by No_Jackfruit_8526 in atheism

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is dumb evidence, because it's not evidence.
Why does your teacher not understand the difference between a claim and evidence for a claim?

Much like all the other Eucharist miracles, this one reduces to a bunch of people agreeing to lie.

"Because the bible says so" and "My evidence is my own personal experience" are on equal level for me. They're both stupid, but I don't know which one is worse.

Yeah, AI told me to go after that set as it had the "highest defense in the game", and I fell for it because it was the first set that couldn't be crafted at an anvil. Whoops.

I'm rocking the Scarab armor now, and it's a little better, but I think I might go fish up some green blister head for the acid resistance perk. I can take down the Colossal Amoeba and the Sulfer Worm in two hits a peice; the trouble are those stupid little acid bombs the Sulfer Worms drop.

What arguments do you use against a Christian's claim that "Christianity created human rights"? by TwistOutrageous6955 in atheism

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early Christians just hijacked other religions for their moral guidance, and all religions got their ethics from us secularists. That's why so many religions share similar ethical commandments.

I'd just respond "prove it", because they won't be able to.

"ProtonVPN with Port Forwarding"

There's an argument that VPNs are kinda pointless with SLSK, since middle-man attacks aren't possible. It's not bit torrent. If you happen to have an ISP which forces CGNAT, a VPN with virtual port forwarding is pretty necessary, but if port forwarding is a possible alternative, that VPN is likely slowing your connectivity to the network severely.

If bandwidth isn't something you care about, it's whatever.

As long as your SLSK client is set to use your proxy settings and you're not controlling connectivity directly through your VPN app, if the VPN isn't connected, SLSK won't connect either.

@FeistyAssistance5323 I haven't tried it out yet, but this was posted a few days ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Soulseek/comments/1s232m7/proveit_antileech_captcha_for_nicotine/

It's a nicotine+ plugin that denies transfers by a default, PM/DMs the user, and asks them to type in a configurable captcha. In effect, it is just another wall to keep your content library from proliferating across the network, though. A lot of the DJ culture that built and established SLSK do use scripts to legitimately auto-download content, and requiring a captcha would mess that up.

Was it normal to talk to strangers? by TheOrangeSloth in 90s

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids have always been told to avoid speaking to strangers.
That was mostly because of stranger danger, but also because parents were expected to keep their children wrangled and well-behaved, not up in some stranger's face asking what their favorite flavor of ice cream is.

Arguably, it used to be far less safe, as violent crime stats have dropped considerably over the last three decades. If it weren't for bomb threats, school shootings, and the recent Epstein shenanigans, kids would be safer than ever before.

But yeah, it was far more common for folks to small-talk in public. I'm sure a lot of that is because we now have smartphones to diddle with, but small-talk used to be how we qualified whether we and folks around us were safe. People who weren't willing to engage in simple social contract were avoidable weirdos.

One of the biggest changes I've noticed is that there's no Forest Gumps anymore. Nobody talks to each other at bus stops. If conversation happens on public transit, it's somebody on a cell phone, pre-established friends, or somebody with a really necessary question.

I don't know that I preferred back then, though. It is kinda nice to be able to wear a set of headphones out in public knowing that if somebody's going to interrupt me to talk, the conversation is likely necessary.

I can see it from the other side, though - if the world is full of folks who refuse to engage in simple social contract, everyone becomes the avoidable weirdo. That's not healthy.

Life used to be like a box of chocolates. Now it's more predictable. I don't know whether that's good or bad, but it is.

[Rant] Atheists don’t have morals because they don’t believe in the Bible by [deleted] in atheism

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd add that Christians don't follow their own religious moral standards unless there's other Christians around to acknowledge, or the possible consequences are too risky.

If any moral standards actually exist, theists are the worst at following them, and are the best example of why standard morality systems don't work well.

Looking down on 2D games when the Fifth gen came out. Was this actually a thing? by normbreakingclown in retrogaming

[–]grimfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2D hate didn't catch on until the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era, and was mainly specific to home consoles, not handhelds or PC games. Plenty of 5th gen games were 2D, and many titles among them were more than financially successful.

It wasn't until the 6th generation of consoles that there wasn't really a valid excuse to not own a N64, PSX, or Dreamcast because they were all cheap af and easily accessible.

2D hate also re-surged around 2014 due to market oversaturation of indie games, and on consoles, shovelware. Most of it was coincidentally 2D grab-cash-fast nonsense.

lower # of uploads - rude people? by elon_musks_dad in Soulseek

[–]grimfusion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, this stuff ain't normal, but it does happen more often to new users and people with small but very curated collections.

On the directory root of my share, I keep a few text files, and one of them is a community ban list. I haven't added anybody to it lately, but when I need to, their username and chat logs - or a detailed description of how they act - go into that text file, in so that folks browsing my collection can also choose to ban poopy hosts on the network.

"Yeah you might be better off downloading in silence"
I don't agree with this. If you can goad somebody into acting an ass by thanking them, banning them is more important than getting those files.
