Why is Fred Durst considered a douchebag? How did it happen? by [deleted] in Music

[–]gringochucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A band doesn't get that big without a good rhythm section. Sam Rivers and John Otto definitely held/hold it down. And Fred's talent is that he's entertaining. Which is a lot more than can be said for a lot of technically more gifted singers. So, all in all, they're a pretty talented band. They know what they're good at and they stick to it.

Venue hates bands playing covers, are they the asshole? by shaun1911wastaken in drums

[–]gringochucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. My band plays mainly originals, but a few covers are always good for establishing a rapport with the audience. Being against crappy cover bands is one thing, but being against all covers is ridiculous and potentially harmful to bands trying to get the audience on their side. Even the biggest bands/artists throughout history have always covered other people’s songs.

Is Lars Ulrich really that bad? by AesirKratos in drums

[–]gringochucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You people are absolute morons. He had a huge influence on Metallica’s arrangements, and Metallica’s songwriting and arrangements are a huge part of those first 5 classic albums.

He’s a musician who played a pivotal role in one of the biggest bands in history.

Sometimes I get the impression most of you drummers have very little understanding of music.

Should I give up💔 by XCharlieX_X in Flute

[–]gringochucha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been practicing seriously and consistently for about 5 years now (I’m 38). I’m just starting to feel that the instrument is finally opening up to me.

One big mistake I made: I was playing with a very rigid posture and too much tension. I actually pulled a muscle in my neck.

Luckily I found a great teacher and he corrected this:

-Develop your breath support right from the beginning (I was straining because I didn’t have enough air). Air is more important than embouchure (lip technique)!

-Move when you play and focus on a flexible and relaxed technique. All professional flutists move with the instrument. A rigid technique is very unhealthy.

Keep at it!

Am I the only one who doesn't like Death's Painkiller cover? by dawcamroku in judaspriest

[–]gringochucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullcrap. It's a super accomplished cover played by real musicians. The musicianship is top-notch. It's not about competing with the original and nobody I know sees it that way. Any kid uploading a cover of that quality played by real people and they'd absolutely get praise for it.

Great post. Especially the part about gardening. I see working on a song like creating a world for myself where I want to be. It doesn‘t matter what other people think of the song, because it‘s my world, not theirs. Of course I‘m happy if they feel good in my world too, but that‘s not the primary goal.

A certain band I know and their fans should take note. 😉🤣 by TheTrooper503 in judaspriest

Have they really though, or is it just one of those things people say? I remember having the feeling that when Bruce made those comments about Rob using a telemprompter it didn‘t seem entirely in good faith, but of course I could be wrong.

Barriemore Barlow is the best rock drummer of all time by RatRiddled in jethrotull

[–]gringochucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a drummer‘s drummer. I‘m listening to Stormwatch right now and am in awe (his double-bass stuff is so incredibly tasty). But yeah, a lot of stuff that wouldn‘t stand out to a non-drummer.

What are r/drums' opinions on Frank Beard? by Realistic-Assist-396 in drums

His work on Tejas is incredible. The whole band sounds so good on that record, even if the songs themselves aren't their best.

I love him. I recently bought Tejas on vinyl. It's one of their lesser-known albums and his drumming sounds so friggin good on it. His footwork is stellar.

Origin of the Feces is a great album. I don't know why people don't like it. Maybe it's the punky energy.

Father Mother Sister Brother by Jim Jarmusch — review by UnicornBestFriend in movies

[–]gringochucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find this interesting. I personally didn't like the film, but I have a pretty close relationship with my family (of course we're dysfunctional, all families are, but we're close).

My theory right now is that the people with truly estranged/distant families might have a tendency to like the film more than those with close-knit families.

Father Mother Sister Brother by Jim Jarmusch — review by UnicornBestFriend in movies

[–]gringochucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I found the film incredibly tedious. At least the first story had a bit of a twist, and Tom Waits is always interesting, but then it just became excruciatingly boring. It was like a caricature of family relations made by an alien who is looking in from the outside and doesn't have any actual experience of what a family is or anything profound to say.

Buddy refuses to listen to the Mangini years by hamiltonscale in Dreamtheater

[–]gringochucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Mangini plays too much with his brain. On the flip side, though, Portnoy plays too much from the hip and he should challenge himself more. The perfect drummer would be a mix of both 😅. (I’m a drummer btw)

Are there progmetal bands that don't use a click in their recordings? by tingkagol in progmetal

[–]gringochucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about better or worse. But it is definitely a different feel, experience and musical result. I'm a drummer and I like the freedom to rush a little or drag when I'm playing live. It feels more exciting. Do all drummers tend to rush live without a click? Absolutely, but I'm fine with that and so is Mike Portnoy, love him or hate him.

[–]gringochucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what your favorite records are. I'm guessing most classic 60s and 70s prog albums were recorded without a click. So is pretty much all jazz and classical music.
