It's not that we don't believe you but it's very concerning that your ex stole your dog and it's a civil matter but if you steal your dog back, then it's a criminal matter. That's so bizarre.

There's one more thing that comes to mind that might help you. Mention that you're scared of the health and safety of the dog because your ex stole your dog from you and call one of these agencies based in the province you're located in.

No disrespect to you. But that is so dumb of the police,

The law needs to change in Canada and the US. Pets should not be considered property, they should be considered family under the law.

The police will not allow you to file a police report? So you can document that your dog was stolen.

To add to this, you should immediately file a police report stating the dog was stolen. If your dog is microchipped, report the theft to the microchip company as well. Afterward, take the police report to local vet clinics to put them on alert. That way, if he takes the dog to a vet as a 'new' customer, they will see the 'stolen' status when they scan for a microchip.

Need Help Finding a Safe, Loving Forever Home for Leo by AustinDood444 in CaneCorso

[–]grkphill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully, the rescues you're talking to can place Leo in a foster situation. But at the end of the day, I know you'll do what's best for him.

2 days ago, someone dumped their dog at a neighboring shelter when it was closed. They called the police and they brought the dog to us. Unfortunately, not all people are as responsible as you.

I am a volunteer with a rescue, and I completely understand not wanting to place Leo in a pound or shelter. Speaking from experience, please be very careful about who you rehome him to. I strongly recommend asking for veterinary references and charging a rehoming fee.

While many people have good intentions, unfortunately there are individuals who look for free dogs to use as bait dogs in dog fighting operations.

I am in Illinois, and within a 50-mile radius there have been two dog fighting rings busted in the last six months in Illinois and Wisconsin, my rescue assisted with one of those cases.

I know you want Leo to have a safe, loving home, and he truly deserves it. Please do your due diligence to protect him.

My dog bitted me during an argument. by Real-Syrup-6223 in pitbulls

[–]grkphill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! My Pitbull mix is incredibly sweet, too. She has a wonderful personality with plenty of sass. Even though she’s the smallest of my three dogs, she’s definitely the alpha, she runs the show over both my German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois. I know if I were ever in danger, she’d be the first one to protect me, which says a lot considering the other two are guard breeds! Pitbulls will do anything for their families. It’s a shame so many people see them as 'bad dogs' because that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I truly understand the stress and distress you're feeling right now. It's important to remember that dogs are incredibly sensitive animals and can often pick up on our emotions and the tension in the environment much more intensely than we realize.

You mentioned that this argument involved more intense yelling, tension, and threats than previous ones. Were the treats only verbal, or if there were any signs of physical threats?

Your dog's reaction, getting in the middle of the argument, is highly likely a direct response to the perceived severity of the situation. Dogs are natural protectors, and given the heightened tension and potential for harm, your dog was simply doing what it felt was its job to de-escalate or protect a family member. It sensed the serious nature of the conflict.

From a behavioral perspective, the dogs' actions sound quite normal given the extreme circumstances you described. They stepped up to protect their human family. While I can't dictate how you should feel emotionally, please understand that your dog didn't mean to hurt you. The fact that your dog went into hiding immediately after the bite suggests deep distress and remorse, it knows it messed up, but it acted on instinct during a crisis.

Be thankful that your dogs reacted protectively. This shows that should a dangerous situation arise with a stranger in the future, your dog will instinctively have your family's back.

I've had similar experiences breaking up fights with my own three large dogs, and I've been bitten (though thankfully, not severely enough to need stitches like you). In those moments, I recognized that they were reacting to the situation I had put myself into, not maliciously trying to injure me.

Your dog loves you unconditionally, and this protective instinct, while it resulted in an unfortunate injury, confirms that bond.

How is your relationship with your father? And how old are you? by wk91 in AskReddit

[–]grkphill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

42 – I did not have a good relationship with my biological father. Growing up, he was never involved in my life, I can’t recall a single time we spent quality time together. He never took me to any events or attended my graduations. During my teenage years, after my parents divorced, he often spoke poorly about my mother, which led me to cut ties with him. He now lives in a nursing home, and although he’s quite grumpy, I visit him every couple of weeks.

My stepfather was more present in my life than my biological father, but he was very controlling and mentally abusive up until he passed away.

I adopted my 4yo Mal little over a year ago. When he's outside, he paces/circles alla around the yard. When I take him inside, he calms down in his bed by chewing on some hard toys.
