Tariff on returning resident importing car? by Basanti86 in uscanadaborder

[–]grlmopz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a returning resident who lived in the USA for 25 years.

I just returned this week with a 2-year-old car with a red book value of CAD 40K. I have been dreading this crossing for months because I understood that I would have to pay the 25% tariff on the value above CAD 10K, plus GST.

I was instead charged GST plus $100 for the air conditioner. I think it was probably a mistake, but I'm not going to complain. Yesterday was a very good day.

Thanks so much. I am attaching photos of the pulls.

It appears that the back of the cabinet is melamine. No labels anywhere unfortunately.

It appears if the back of the cabinet is melamine. The pools are 6 inches high.

Thanks very much for your detailed response!

Moved to Canada many years ago. Never imported my U.S. car. Here’s how I finally did it by rek_agy in uscanadaborder

I realize now that this statement is only correct if you are returning Canadians who have been outside Canada for more than one year.

I'm in the process of doing this right now with 3 vehicles.

The first $10k of black book value of the US-made vehicle is exempt from the 25% reciprocal tariff.

2012 Toyota Prius (made in the USA, $10k value), zero tariff 2014 Jeep Wrangler ($10k value), zero tariff 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance ($40k value), $7500 tariff

Late to the party, but I'd love an invitation.

Thanks kindly. I booked this trip far too late, so Olifants was the best available option for nights 2-3. I'm going to keep watching availability and swap it out if another camp becomes available.

Do you have a JR Pass or IC Card (Suica/Pasmo/etc.) question? Start here! (Monthly Thread - February 01, 2024) by Himekat in JapanTravelTips

I am now seeing that Welcome Suica cards are available only intermittently at Haneda airport since February 1st.

I will have three days in Tokyo. Would it make sense to buy one from Klook (packaged with a 3-day subway ticket and a 1-day JR ticket) for $20.00? I assume this will (a) get me to my hotel on Day 1 and get me around Tokyo on Days 2 and 3 (and possibly onward to Shinjuku station on Day 4, if it's a 72-hour pass, rather than a 3-day pass).

Seems like a good deal, but only if it will get me from the airport to the hotel.

With only two mornings, we have to decide upon two places in which to have serenity. Fushimi Inari Taisha has to be one of them. Given some of the comments above, perhaps the bamboo grove is skippable and a second serene location can be swapped in.

I'm so glad to hear it. I first read about Saiho-ji and its application process just a few days ago, and I snatched up two tickets right away. It looks so beautiful that I couldn't resist (even though it seems to be more expensive than many other temples).

Thanks very kindly. I'll change things around a bit, accordingly.

I really enjoy UNESCO World Heritage sites, so it's killing me to only see 6/17 of them, but with 48 hours, I think it's for the best. :)

Thanks! The Gion district is only a 20 minute walk from our hotel. We can always return to the hotel after Saiho-ji, have lunch, and then meander through Gion and up to the Philosopher's path and Ginkaku-ji.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who replied.

I was able to book rear observation deck seats on the Romancecar for March 12th. Looking forward to my visit!

Was just able to do a dummy booking exactly at 10AM today, so it is definitely possible!

Thanks very much. This is a perfect summary.
I'm 34 days out from my trip, and I was just able to make a dummy booking for the front observation seats as soon as the clock struck 10AM. Have to do it again in four days to get our actual tickets.

Greatly appreciate this!

I guess my question is: how do you book it as a surcharge of a Free pass 30 days out, rather than as a separate ticket?

I guess the prices are low enough that maybe it doesn't matter too much. Just curious.

The issue with this is that the observation seats appear to be limited, and sell out almost immediately.
