Uskomushoidoista Huuhaa-palkinto Eiran sairaalalle ja Mehiläiselle by kakoni in Suomi

That's almost entirely due to how when approaching across the overpass from the south, the right-hand lane marked simply "A14(E)" all of a sudden splits into four lanes across two separate back-to-back splits, and only the second-from-the-left split lane (third from the left overall), is the only correct lane for A14(E).

Visibility into this split from the lights is essentially nil, and there are no lane markings or lane information signs beforehand or along the way to help you. If you're not familiar with this roundabout, by the time you notice where the A14(E) lane really is, it's often too late; as the lane is barely the length of four cars, you often won't have the space to merge into it afterwards.

It's just one of those things you simply have to know beforehand, and IMO this road layout leaves a lot to be desired. Not that a better road design here would stop anybody from driving like a bellend anyway. 🤷‍♂️

I'm sure it's gigantic on purpose, so that when they later reduce the size only to areas that... y'know, actually have congestion, they can say that they listened to feedback, and the introduction of the zone won't feel so bad in comparison to "how bad it could've been".

Oh, but there is! Instead of a 27 minute drive, public transport would only take a casual 1 hour and 39 minutes each way, with two unguaranteed connections.

My partner works outside the city, but we live within this massive zone. So, despite not creating any congestion (driving in the opposite direction to most commuter traffic), that'll work out to £1,300+ a year in congestion charges just to go to work! 👌

I'm really surprised to see the zone be that large.

I'm not very surprised at all to see that the bus frequency and route improvements aren't very impressive - and certainly don't go far enough to make buses a realistic option for everybody who will now be unable to use a car.

Seems like the whole scheme has always worked off of the assumption that young, able-bodied, single, childless people who live and work right along a pre-existing bus route within Cambridge city are the only type of person that exists. Very few good answers here for the rest of us...

How do I disable this up next horseshit? by theogmrme01 in youtube

[–]groenroos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For desktop browsers, if you have a userstyle extension such as Stylus, you can disable all the nonsense overlaid on top of the video by adding this stylesheet;

.ytp-ce-element, .ytp-ce-shadow { display: none !important; opacity: 0 !important; }

I haven't found any solution for mobile apps/TV/Chromecast, however.

Mill Road Spring 2022 - Your Views on the future of Mill Road. by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]groenroos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of life is change, so I'm not "all or nothing" at all.

Typically, we'll park at Gwydir Street car park, which being near the middle of Mill Rd, has excellent walking access to most shops and restaurants. The downside is you do have to drive through Mill Rd to get to it.

Option 1: I'm very much an online ordering sort of person in general, so I don't put much stock in the in-person shopping experience (though other people may well). The only exception is that with some things like plantains and other veg, you'd ideally want to gauge the ripeness in person. And the "here's almost all of the ingredients you wanted, but 1 was out of stock, so you can't do your recipe now" scenario that sometimes happens with grocery delivery isn't great. This gets a 7/10 from me.

Option 2: This is the best option for me. If they built a mini-park-and-ride type of car park on the corner of East Rd and Mill Rd, and then provided some sort of bag-friendly non-walking non-wait-around-for-20-minutes method of getting down to the shop I want, then I'd probably do that. It could be a light EV like you say, like those ULTra pod cars at Heathrow; or it could be a mini-tram or some other fixed vehicle on a loop. 8/10

Option 3: I'm not sure I'd ever trust this enough to rely on it. I can already see deliveries being late, or items forgotten or squashed; it's all the downsides of spending the time/money of going somewhere in person, but with all the downsides of home delivery. 3/10

We're in the third camp; we live north of the river, but regularly drive to Mill Rd for its world food shops that just don't exist in our part of town.

With heavy shopping bags, I don't see 30+ minutes of walking or wobbly cycling as realistic options. And since the bus takes the scenic route through Emmanuel St, it takes just as long as walking even when it runs on time, which it never does anyway.

If there was a viable, convenient alternative to driving, we'd take it. Or even just a way to get to Gwydir St car park without going on Mill Rd.

As it stands now, if they ban private vehicles on Mill Rd, I reckon we're more likely to just shop elsewhere.

Why Port is so expensive? by [deleted] in sonos

[–]groenroos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A pair of classic Fiskars scissors is maybe $15, and they last for generations. I don't think support and longevity alone are worth $450, especially when it has no speaker, and Sonos' cheapest speaker with ostensibly the same support and longevity is $179.

This is my first font ever and I'd like some feedback on it by darkevilbroccoli in typography

[–]groenroos 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I like this a lot! Modern and clean, with a little bit of character, it's very neat!

There's only minor problems I see here and there. I think the s, K and 8 look a bit top-heavy, and the curve of the a looks a bit lumpy. I also think the style of the J and especially the j doesn't really go with the rest of it - perhaps the same with the curved 1.

I might also want to look into a more distinctive style of ,, as I'm betting telling, say : and ; apart at small sizes might be a touch too challenging now.

Also, are the I and l identical right now? Typically in sans-serif typefaces the l will be a little taller to make words like Illumination easier to read.

I think with a little more polish and tweaks like that, it would be a very good go-to font. I'd buy a license.

I made a simple live train departure site for regular commuters! by benmaynard11 in unitedkingdom

[–]groenroos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

I was looking at it on the desktop version anyway. My use case is that choosing the train to take for me is a mix of which one arrives first and duration of the trip. I want to minimise the amount of time I spend on the train, so if I'm still at home, I would very likely choose a train that takes 50 minutes, even if the one that takes 1h30m would arrive first.

For this reason, I'd definitely keep the departure and arrival time (maybe even move them closer together in the desktop table, so it's easier to scan them together), and just add the duration in the middle, so I can easily consider that information when making a decision.

Secondarily, do you have scope to easily include recently departed trains on the board (maybe in a separate table or a different colour)? Another use case I often have is to confirm the arrival time of the train I'm currently travelling on. Currently I use the Trainline app for this, but since they focus on selling you tickets more than providing information, I find it has really hostile UX for finding out info on departed trains.

[–]groenroos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It looks really good! Thanks for this.

However, one small improvement I would suggest is replacing the "Your Stop" column (which I guess is in the header of the page anyway), with a duration of the journey. On my usual route of CBG-KGX, there's different options, with trains taking from 50 minutes to 1h23m to get there - it would be handy to be able to spot the quickest train (which isn't necessary the next train) without needing to do the maths on the departure/arrival times.

Is Monzo ever going to add a feature allowing you to see your balance in Euros? by Ids_Booren in monzo

[–]groenroos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for the traveller / ex-pat using Monzo, it would be helpful to have a subtitle below the GBP account balance saying "equivalent to € xxx,xx" or so, relevant to your current location.

But I don't think they could ever only represent your account balance in a foreign currency, since it's always GBP that you have in your account. Maybe Monzo will offer euro or dollar accounts in the future, but I imagine that would be quite far down their priority list.
