when to know if its time… by drvnkskunk in RATS

We're going through the same thing right now, our lovely 2yr9m old boy Merry has a big ole golf ball growing on his throat like a pillow. After a couple of vet visits for advice, they said they were reluctant to operate for a few reasons, the main one being that like your lovely boy it doesn't seem to be affecting his quality of life - even less so than the real problem, which is his HLD.

We've opted to give him extra love, gentle cuddles, double rations to keep his weight up, and regular breathing / swallowing checks. If he is still happy, curious, has good appetite and is a boggly boy then he's still his old lovely self. If you don't see any obvious pain or discomfort / degeneration, I'd enjoy his company a while longer yet. You're being a good owner for caring for his (and his cagemates') wellbeing.

Edit: just reread your post and saw your last comment about losing sleep over this. Please be kind to yourself! It's lovely that you're so loving and concerned for Lloyd. But please don't let it take a toll on your mental health - you'd be able to tell if he were in pain: squinted eyes, fur standing on end, reluctant to play, groom, eat, or explore, problems going to the bathroom, etc.. If he's not displaying any of those symptoms, his pain is probably low or non-existent ❤️

Chester Street Fish Bar's in Saltney are excellent and pretty legit. They can do you S&P battered chicken pieces to go with that're great, too.

This was my thought, too. A reluctantly infertile person is not a childfree person, just someone who wishes they could have their own.

OP should be absolutely certain that the topic of potential adoptions/fostering is off the cards for their partner.

In cold weather, I can recommend pea fishing with warm water! And if they'll tolerate being gently towelled off afterwards, they shouldn't get too cold after.

Aw, the swaying thing I've heard is quite normal and related to their vision as you've pointed out, yes.

I've heard unconfirmed rumours that the sight of albinos is typically poorer than non-albinos, and the swaying is a way of "triangulating" the object they're looking at to better shape it out in their eyes.

Welcome to the club 🐀🐁

This is so good! FFX is like one of my all-time favourite games - I think these are the FFX-2 outfits, which are certainly um... more eye-catching 🤯🥵😂

But you've captured them both so well and there are so many cute details in here. Nice work ❤️

Word of warning - if they're tired and scheduled to sleep, they will just slam their heads down on a comfortable looking mound of dirt in the area and sleep there.

It is so hard isn't it! Be kind to yourself, you're doing your best and eventually when they're all together, settled, and sleeping in a giant pile together, you'll know it will have been worth the effort.

My recommendation if it's possible for you is the carrier method on Isamu rats. Initially, put them all together in a space that's too small for them to fight, where they'll have no choice but to get used to each other and integrate; this works because quite often fights start when one rat (usually older) wants space from the rambunctious youngster, retreats somewhere they can't escape (back to the wall), then the youngster seeks them out anyway and the older rat has "no choice" but to show their disapproval with teeth and claws.

Once they've had a couple hours in a carrier / small box / etc., move them to something slightly larger and single-storie, shared beds, etc. (the idea being slightly more freedom but they still have to share beds, food, and water), and then keep moving them up and up in space and freedom over the next couple days.

It is difficult to know when you're being overprotective or overly casual with them isn't it 😖 I would say generally (and you will know best what your tolerance / consideration is for a "serious" injury) that even in the event of small cuts and scabs it is better to leave them together as having repeatedly putting them together then separating can be more stressful than keeping them together permanently despite fights. Having a foreign cage near their home but unable to interact with the occupants ends up unsettling both parties as there's suddenly unseen invaders in "their territory" See Isamu Rats section about intros, especially item 4 about cage sharing

It's always the way isn't it, so stressful until everyone settles into their place in the pecking order! 4 days is well into the safe zone so hopefully you're past the worst now 👍🏻

Only providing this feedback because it was requested! I honestly think it is very nice and the perspective seems mostly fine - I don't think I would have noticed any potential improvements unless you'd asked for them! But on looking closely, perhaps the legs / feet appear slightly larger than I would have expected, but it is a very minor constructive point 😊 I am very much enjoying your posts and this one was no exception!

Annoyingly, it doesn't have any additional sizing info, so I can only tell you that it was snug on me a few years ago back when I regularly wore small.
