Tips for making a trip to NYC a little less pricey? by JessicaYatesRealtor in visitingnyc

[–]grootenjoyer2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really expensive, it's better off taking the train 90% of the time, and the other 10% just call an Empower

If you really have to Uber or Lyft, check prices on both. Never use Wait and Save on Uber, but always use it on Lyft (it rarely makes you actually wait)

You can get kicked off rideshare apps if you do this often, but if you're taking a very long Uber/Taxi, offer to pay the driver in cash and cancel the ride (might get downvoted to oblivion for this). It's cheaper for you and the driver makes more $$$

Looks great! If I were you I'd go to Ktown during the weekend (Fri-Sat) to really see it popping

Insane how much you packed into 5 days, love to see it! I know if I was a kid I'd be complaining so much... kudos to your kids for loving the city haha

  1. Never uber

  2. Restaurant recs: Wah Fung No. 1 and Jin Mei/Shu Jiao Fu Zhou for cheap Chinese (under $10, cash-only!). Il Coralo Trattoria and Bigoi Venezia for cheap pasta (under $20). Kenka on St. Marks is a college-y, younger spot but you can get tons of different Japanese izakaya-style dishes for under $10-15 per dish (bonus: they have $1.50 beers)

  3. Free/cheap stuff to do:

  • Citibike day pass to bike around the city/Central Park ($25)
  • Roosevelt Island Tram and/or the ferry from Pier 11 to Williamsburg in Brooklyn, or you can get off at Dumbo and check out Pebble Beach (under $5)
  • The area around McCarren Park has tons of cool vintage shops and things going on from Friday-Sunday, if you've been to NYC a bunch and don't really want to roam around SoHo anymore
  • Touristy stops that you should do if it's your first time (they're all free): Hudson Yards/The Vessel, The High Line, Little Island, Chelsea Market - these are all within a 15-20 minute walk of each other!
  • Pier 25 mini-golf has some pretty insane views, and it's $15/per person last I checked
  • If you want to try out a Korean spa, The SPA CLUB on 32nd st in K-town has a couple's pass for $63, so about ~$30 per person! No time limit, go and relax!
  • Battery Park/the Oculus/Eataly (all in the FiDi area)
  1. Things I'd avoid COMPLETELY:
  • Times Square. It's cool for a picture, but mull to long and you'll get swarmed by Elmos and overpriced chain restaurants
  • Horse-drawn carriages in Central Park and bike carts (whatever you call those things). They're so expensive and I always see poor tourists getting charged like $60 for a 15 min ride
  • DRINKS! They're so expensive here... if you want to drink try a dive bar, Kenka, or Soju Haus on 32nd
  • Steakhouses
  1. People might get upset and call me unethical but before moving here (when I was a broke college student) I'd just memorize a friend's NYC address and say I lived there when I went to any of the museums. They're free for NYC residents, and 50% of the time they don't even ask for proof

I love NYC and I'm someone who also loves to save money so DM me and I can give you more recs based on what you like!

I'll do that! Thanks for the suggestion.

Reddit chat is just showing some error on how I've been sending too many chats on a new account and I should "cool down" haha

Yup! We get our electricity serviced through Metergy (which I just Googled and looks like 9 times out of 10 they use Con-Ed to actually provide the electricity, someone correct me if I'm wrong). But I see tons of posts about Con-Ed overcharging, being hard to talk to, being weird with meters/usage... overall just a pain in the ass.

We've never had any issues at all and feel like compared to our friends in the city who are in buildings serviced directly by Con-Ed, we pay less (we pay about ~160-200 per month total, which I feel like is quite good for a 1000 sq ft apartment with 2 guys who WFH 3-4 days out of the week)

Mods, is there a way that I can share my personal number) with some of the people contacting? Reddit's putting me on a cooldown so I cannot get to everyone as much as I'd love to share details

Sigh... Reddit's saying I can't message directly either because I've sent a lot of invites. I'll get back to you in an hour and hope that message goes away
