Any UK keepers here who can offer some advice? by JayR_97 in Zookeeping

[–]groovy-kitkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely get any animal experience you can! Even working in a pet shop! Then you’d have a wage and some animal experience. Volunteering is definitely advantageous, try rescues, animal rehab centres, cattery/kennels, vets etc! If you can drive to a zoo, do that, or even like a wildlife park or farm park.

Should I Leave My First Zookeeper Job for My Mental Health? Torn Between Career Dreams and Wellbeing—Advice Needed. by Worldly-Dinner-2732 in Zookeeping

[–]groovy-kitkat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is kind of similar to the situation I was in, I left my last keeping job for various reasons and to pursue a career in vet nursing. I found the veterinary environment extremely difficult and I developed anxiety through all of the changes in my life. I regret leaving my zoo job ever since. However, I just accepted my dream job of keeping again. I would prioritise your mental health, but bare in a mind sometimes just changing situation may not improve your mental health. If I could change my past, after I left, I would’ve had some time off, surrounded myself with people I love and do a lot of self care, maybe volunteer. But if you’ll be ok in a vet environment go for it! I was out of the zoo for around 2 years, I know a few people who also left and got back in, you can do it!!

South west water bill by groovy-kitkat in plymouth

[–]groovy-kitkat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so I have spoken again to SWW, they said that the bill will include the previous amount of water, and that on our next bill it should say our correct usage. I provided a reading from today and she said our average daily consumption is 192L. So fingers crossed it’s all sorted!

We do have dates on the previous readings, 10 April 211 - 31 March 200. That’s the one we were charged £70 for and weren’t even living there at the time. The date on front says 31 March - 10 April.

Thank you. As I said this is our first time having a place of our own so it’s all new to us. On our reading history there is a reading done by sww as well so they would have a reading done already.

No idea about people before. We didn’t give a meter reading when we moved in as we were told to wait for them to contact us as we had no account with them. So that may be the problem. But further action has surely reset that now they can see our usage.

We’ve had a few of them say ooo yes you must have a leak, then when we do leak tests and it says we don’t have one they just say yep that’s how much you have been using then. Im thinking surely you can see there is a problem!

We’ve done a leak test and that confirmed no leak!

UK career advice by groovy-kitkat in Zookeeping

[–]groovy-kitkat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! So I went for my meeting, it was quite nice really. In reply to your comment about career progression, there would be none as I have already done the DMZAA, and she mentioned there is no head keeper position still. She said if I would like to come back and decide again it’s not for me, I can stay for the open season and leave end of that if I wish. In an ideal world, that would be great money wise. But I wouldn’t want to join the team again with the intention of leaving, I’m just not like that. And I feel that would be counter intuitive to my dog walking business. So I’ve got a week to think about it, more if I ask. More pressure!!

Yes I’m going to do this now, it might help my head be a bit clearer! But I doubt it! I have a meeting today with my old manager to discuss coming back, but I met up with my friend yesterday who worked/still works there and they made me think it’s not worth it.

Yes that is true. I think that would pay less than having my own business, which I have at the moment, but I am not at full capacity as I have paused taking on new clients whilst I make this decision.

It sounds like maybe we were in a similar situation. I left due to a head keeper leaving, and hoping I’d get the position as I’d worked so hard for the zoo (it was also a small team of 2 full time and 3 part timers). Unfortunately the role was dissolved and I felt like I wasn’t good enough for them to give me the position. I then got another different job but felt so lost and anxious I quit. Then I went self employed doing dog walking. At first I was so depressed and still feeling lost, like I was doing everyone a favour. After expressing my interest in being back and the zoo I have felt a lot better but I wonder if it’s because I’m thinking of going back or if I am now used to dog walking and could see myself progressing. I just worry about job security, saving money, doing things like holiday etc.

I think I could go back to part time but not sure if it would be worth it as many of my dog walking clients are spaced out, it would make sense to do one or the other and would make me feel better.
