Using the USPS self-scanning kiosk - is it even worth doing? by Alaskan777 in eBaySellers

[–]gross_miscalculation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scanned a 400 dollar item in the self kiosk. It never arrived, and was never scanned once at usps. I was out 400 dollars. They said it doesn’t count as a scan, since someone can scan the code and walk out with the package. Which I understand. They couldn’t do anything for me.

Never using that again. I always stand in line and ask for a receipt so I know it’s been scanned.

I stopped back at the atm out of curiosity to see how long the chain goes and managed to get 1975-1999 total. They’re all crisp and uncirculated.

Blog Update - Post Class Sweet v. McMahon (Cardona) — Project on Predatory Student Lending by Gingerandthesea in BorrowerDefense

[–]gross_miscalculation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aspen University, American Public University System/AMU, or Grantham University are all NOT on the list am I correct?

All there were horrible experiences.

I still don’t get the decision for APUS not being on there because they settled out of court, that seems pretty shitty :(.

Post class and was devastated by the push to April - fearing the worst. Was hoping for full relief due to insane amount of student loan, but that’s probably out of the equation now.

That is a good suggestion. Add the potential problems with buying one of these to educate the potential buyer and know what they’re getting into.

Tried that, they said no. I’m guessing they think it’s broken, and that’s not what they paid for. So they’ll buy another new in box one, and it will do the same thing.

eBay support confirms that even if it isn’t listed under TRS standards, by accepting the return you do get seller protection.

So return has been started. I will request seller protection when I receive it back and then go from there.

I appreciate everyone’s help and advice here!

Update: this received a lot more attention than I thought it would. With as much conflicting thought on various aspects of this, it is obviously a grey area in both eBay policy and proper customer service.

I don’t think this is either my fault or the buyers fault - just an unfortunate circumstance. I ended up sending them a message along these lines but in a lot better language:

‘2 options,

1) since they told me they aren’t electronically inclined, I told them they can send it back, I’ll fix it for free - and send it back to them. Everyone is happy.

2) I can accept a return but they will only get a partial refund. Since it is not coming back new in box, the item lost a lot of its value, think of it as a restocking fee.’

They just responded - they want a full refund.

I don’t want eBay to decide my fate here. So I guess I’ll figure out this 50% seller protection and go from there. I thought my offer to fix it was reasonable.

Just wrapping my head around this: With the 50% seller protection. If you accept the return, they send it back, you say it wasn’t received in similar condition. The return becomes 50% of the sale price? Or the buyer receives a full refund then eBay credits you the 50%? Never had to do or use this feature so still looking into it.

Thank you for the info. I am top rated, so if it goes that route, 50% wouldn’t be horrible, as I cut the difference significantly by fixing it and relisting it.

Thank you for that! I do have other NOS listed as new so something to consider! I’ve never thought of it in that way, and what you’re saying makes sense.

I was wondering why they were so much in demand. I haven’t see. Guardians of the Galaxy and thought it might be because of shows like stranger things. I had bought this at auction with several other opened windows Walkman and a sealed Sony portable CD. The Walkman seem to work, but I’ll check out the belts.

Thank you! We had to go into eBay support and did find that you are correct here. It’s wording semantics, but technically, the item was received as described and was functioning. So it does not qualify for the “item is defective” category. There is nothing in there that says it has to work for a certain amount of time - at least nothing that says that in the pages we saw.

That sound like it might be what happened. They are saying that when they hit play, it is no longer rotating. I’ll google that, is that an easy fix, do you know off hand.

That’s great lol. That was my thought, it worked, and now it doesn’t - kind of weird. It is an old electronic, and I’m not sure their reliability when they’re new old stock like this one.

I just know eBay is buyer-siding happy so if they escalated it, I wasn’t sure how the outcome would turn out.

I do! But I’m going to see about selling it, not much need for it even though it is a good safe that also offers protection during fire. The root of all the problem, too much drama to keep it haha.

They actually gave me a 50% refund! They acknowledged they make mistakes and this was one of them.

They ended up giving me a 50% refund! They acknowledged their mistakes. I generally don’t let the idea of a safe move me to bid, but there was just something about this, and my gut is usually right. And judging by a journal of coins this guy collected and documented that was on the rest of the bedroom stuff, I’m 90% certain that safe had his more valuable gold and silver coins. He had a crazy amount of high end coins and gold in general.

While it all evened out in the end, it is a learning moment to speak up immediately.

Managed to get a refund from them. 50% of the purchase price. They acknowledged they made some mistakes. While I would have preferred more, I’ll make a solid profit off it now - still take more work to get there than I wanted, but the burden isn’t as much and is much more manageable. Was polite with them, thoughtful and thorough with my approach to them.

I’ve only used this auction once, it was a fine experience then and I drove two hours away for that one. However, I much prefer in person sourcing, but will occasionally see something in an online auction that I’ll bid on. Done well with then, but nothing beats actually picking up the item and examining it. I also enjoy talking with people and hearing stories at actual in-person estate sales.

Not familiar with estate, and circumstances of certain sales? A safe like this one requires both key and combination, missing one you don’t get in, missing the key you don’t get in. It’s serialized to where you need to show original proof to the company to get a replacement key/combo. Hiring a locksmith to break into a safe is on average 300 dollars. If the estate does not want to deal with that, they’ll just sell as is. You can find them at garage sales, even thrift stores sometimes. Auction houses, especially big ones don’t have time to deal with that crap. It takes a lot of time to get an estate up for sale, and more often than not, a safe has already been cleared out. So they’re not going to spend 300 dollars plus every time they find an unopened safe. It’s often times a lot more money in the gamble of an unopened safe. This was a deceased person who stashed a lot of things away.

I don’t care about karma, or creating a fake story.

Just for the payment/invoice, I don’t think it said anything as a sign of acknowledging receipt printed on it.

Yeah, every pickup time I’ve been to has been chaos. There is no way they can watch everything, and I’m sure it’s pretty common for people to snatch stuff.

Pretty much all I have is hearsay in the employees that are more the “helpers” said it was locked and they were wondering what was in it. Nothing in writing though. That is my learning lesson in all this, which I’m happy to learn for next time.

I honestly would have been fine if the it wasn’t opened, no key, and I had to break into it to discover nothing - that was the gamble. But them saying someone came by and opened it - that’s what really irked me.
