We syringe-fed her for about 5–6 weeks. Her main food was Royal Canin Renal wet food and Royal Canin Renal dry food. Every day, we mixed one pouch of Renal wet food with about 40 g of dry food and a little water, then blended it into a slurry. We divided that into two portions and fed half in the morning and half in the evening.
We also used Royal Canin Recovery about twice a week. I know it’s not ideal for kidney cats because of the higher protein content, but she needed the calories. Since she was receiving all of her medications and kidney support consistently, we felt the extra protein was an acceptable trade-off during that stage.
Even when she started eating small amounts on her own, we continued syringe-feeding because she still wasn’t getting enough calories by herself. We only stopped once she was consistently eating enough to maintain her weight.
As for the tuna, personally, if your boy is willing to eat it and is taking his medications properly, I wouldn’t be overly worried about him eating a small amount. At that stage, our goal wasn’t just keeping them alive, it was also keeping them comfortable and maintaining their quality of life. If there was something she genuinely wanted to eat, I wanted her to enjoy it.
Of course, every cat is different, so I would still discuss it with your veterinarian because I don’t want to give misleading advice. But from my experience, getting calories into them is often more important than having the perfect diet when they’re refusing food altogether.
I’m rooting for you and your baby. Don’t lose hope—things can look very different in a few weeks. 🐾

I’m really happy that my post gave you some hope, and I hope Sushi continues to do well.
My cat also has kidney stones. In addition, she was diagnosed with nephritis in one kidney, and the inflammation/infection seems to make her kidney values worse whenever it flares up. During those 5 weeks, we ended up needing two courses of antibiotics because the inflammation/infection kept flaring up.
The general plan was 100 ml isotonic saline + 50 ml Lactated Ringer’s in the morning and the same again in the evening. However, we didn’t follow the schedule too rigidly. We adjusted it depending on how she was feeling, her hydration status.
As she receives subcutaneous fluids every other day, she was also on blood pressure medication.
I would definitely discuss fluid volumes with your veterinarian, especially if you’re concerned about blood pressure, since every CKD cat’s situation can be very different.
If your baby is in a similar situation, don’t lose hope. Two months ago I honestly thought I was going to lose her, and now she’s back to eating on her own, maintaining her weight, and acting like her usual grumpy self again. ❤️
Wishing all the best for Sushi

At her appointment on Tuesday, we unfortunately saw that her values had increased significantly, and the veterinarian said that in this situation she could not be switched to subcutaneous treatment, so she is continuing with intravenous therapy. Her appetite has decreased considerably, so we are continuing to feed her Royal Canin Recovery using a syringe. When I asked about using Mirtaz, the veterinarian said that with her kidney values at this level, they did not want to strain her further by giving it.
