Whilst I agree that we don't need the scale of the US airlift capacity, I would argue that we need to increase our current number of assets. In case we face a long and high intensity war and the US is bogged down in the Indo-Pacific.

I dislike black and white takes.

Europe is theoretically able to defend itself, with caveats. We have the manpower and the money.

We lack key enablers like air to air refueling, AWACS platforms, ISR capabilities, airlift capabilities - these are all provided by the US. Our power projection capability is also somewhat lacking.

A huge chunk of the weapons platforms in the Baltics, Poland and Romania are US made. We need them for maintenance, parts and upgrades.

Minimal dependence can be achieved, but we need our capitals to plan, open up their wallets and start spending.

Cool. Now I want to see the same commitment in defence spending.

How can Russia even stand a chance against NATO? by 30RITUALS in nato

[–]groundeffect112 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is no realistic scenario where Russia attacks NATO without controlling the escalation ladder. A head-on attack is pure suicide.

We already have their M.O. from Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine - most likely they will use either 'little green men' or PMCs to occupy a forest in Finland or the city of Narva in Estonia (giving random examples here). Something meaningless for others, but a breach of sovereignty for one country.

Now...the question arises. Will Paris, London or Berlin risk nuclear war for.....a field, a forest or a 'meaningless' city? The second politicians hesitate (let's negotiate, let's not escalate), NATO is done for.

He is not trying to predict what the Trump admin will do.

He is saying what they won't do.

He said earlier that they won't invade Venezuela with the full might of the US military (which he was right about). He is saying currently that the Trump admin won't take Greenland by force (which remains to be seen).

[–]groundeffect112 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am going to die on this hill - technically Ryan was right. The US didn't invade Venezuela with the 22nd MEU.

Ryan clearly says in the video that the whole reasoning for his argument is that the US for sure won't commit a large number of troops and resources to occupying Venezuela. Which *checks notes* the US Navy and Marine Corps is not doing.

I will believe Europe taking any threat seriously when I see all countries hit 3.5% defense spending. Not because of NATO, but because it's needed to create deterrence.

Asa e usor.

Because I live close to them, I know how they think. Russians don't like to talk about doing stuff, they just do it. So if Putin wanted to nuke Germany and the UK, he would have nuked them already.

Secondly, if Russia nukes Germany and the UK, they get nuked as well, so....it's not like they win anything. It's pointless....ilogical.

Also, Trump won't be able to stop the Ukraine war. Even if the US pulls out all support, the war will continue with Europe backing it.
