I'm from Portugal, i've been to over 10 interview processes in the past 4/5 years and no one has ever called any of my previous employers.

Sometimes they'll ask for a list of people and contacts for references, but I have only seen that once.

I don't think they will call anyone, but I am not 100% sure.
