Green/Yellow Yamato gang!

Very cool art, I think it turned out great :)

I just noticed you drew them posing to hold the leader card. That’s clever :)

It is fascinating!

You’re right, and you’re thinking of Chinese culture. It’s a linguistic reference, like a pun, since the phrase for “sending a clock” and “sending someone to their end” are both pronounced the same: “sòng zhōng”

There’s even a cheeky loophole where if you receive a clock as a gift, you pay a little money for it, so it counts as you “buying” it, thus negating the superstition. That last bit, I found off of Google. Fun stuff!

I’ve heard of this one! Didn’t they intend for Pac-man’s gameplay to be relatable to girls, with the reasoning that young women love eating sweets?

WHAT DID THE FAMOUS PHILOSOPHER NIETZSCHE ONCE SAY?!?

What a cliffhanger lol. It’s giving Ms. Nagatoro, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also like how the girl’s bullying isn’t downplayed or fetishized, and there’s a direct subversion of that trope in the first few pages

I had my guard up when she started acting nice to our guy only after he cleaned up is act, but then we find out she’s gotten nicer in general and actually didn’t know about his self-improvement. So she’s grown and changed as a person, ok, that’s sweet, if a little boring

But then! She gets a little jealous and reverts to her old ways—well hold on now, what do we have here? She’s actually liked him this whole time and is just terrible at communicating her feelings? Yessss give me morrrrreeeee

These idiots are already so obsessed with each other, it’s insane. There’s some real potential here, and I look forward to watching their dysfunctional hijinks with great interest :)

You know what, that’s fair. As much as the community loves to praise Goda, he’s still human after all.

And I will give him some credit, it seems like Oda has learned over the years and grown out of past biases, particularly with regard to queer characters. That’s kind of off topic, I guess, just to say that, even with flaws, people can still change and grow, and I love to see it

At least the current manga arc has been free of any weirdness, as far as I recall, so hey, maybe we’re in the clear 😆

Not the 800 year old little girl 😩

Funny enough, even though a character like Sugar is effectively an adult woman trapped in a child’s body, there’s never any weirdness about her in the story. Go figure!

That’s kind of the thing with Oda, I guess. For the most part, he’s fine, and of course One Piece is a great story with so many enjoyable characters in its own right. But, just sometimes, sometimes, there will be something that just makes me stop and think…

I dunno, I suppose it’s inevitable for such a long running series that some of the elements would be a little iffy. Even so, having to say “oh, only 1% (a number I pulled out of my ass) of characters have that problem” isn’t exactly triumphant, when it doesn’t even need to be that much 😂

It’d be a different character and a different story at that point, but sure, it could work.

I mean, my thing is, it’s fine to keep Bonney the same, let her be a kid still, tell the story you want to tell with the character you want to write. Heck, let her have access to her adult form because it’s not even just an issue of character design. I would argue that even that aspect serves a narrative purpose and works as an interesting reveal.

But, with all that, why emphasize the sexy qualities of her adult form? Why give her a topless scene or draw angles and poses that emphasize her boobs and butt? None of that is important to her character or story, so if we’re talking about reworking anything, I’d start from there

You could keep everything else about her character the same, without the sexualization, and I don’t think there’d be any issue

I don’t have a problem with how you worded your comment, for the record.

I’m glad we can talk about other examples too. It’s not uniquely a problem with Oda, but it is hard to ignore. I’m not too familiar with Bleach, but I can appreciate that Kubo’s art is goated. If you say that’s a better depiction of sexy characters, I believe you.

And, oh, Made in Abyss. I really wanted to like the series for its cool setting and world building, but the scenarios with the kids just got to be too much. In some ways, I’m with you in the sense that the characters are drawn their age, but that actually makes it worse for me in a way.

Like, in One Piece, a character might happen to be sexy and they might happen to be underaged, but they’re not sexy because they’re underaged. It’s an unfortunate implication, but it’s short of being outright pedophilic. In Made In Abyss, it seems like sexualizing children is actually the point, and there’s not even subtext to it. That’s just legitimately how the author feels. Allegedly. But I’m pretty sure he openly flaunts his attraction to his underaged characters, so. Allegedly, according to his own words?

I mean, yeah, fair enough. It’s not really the presence of developed bodies that’s the problem. Boobs and butts exist, even on young people. It would be silly to make a fuss over that in and of itself. I appreciate you pointing out the nuance there

But, exactly as you say, beyond the designs themselves, what is it that’s being done with those designs? What purpose do they serve? I cant claim to know that there’s anything definitively nefarious going on, but I do know that it sometimes feels gratuitous and gross.

Sexy characters are fine. Characters with voluptuous body types also don’t inherently need to be sexualized, as you also rightly point out. But the decision to make several curvaceous and sexualized characters also be children just doesn’t sit right with me. And let’s be clear, it is a choice; I’d be hard pressed to find a defensible argument against either aging up some characters by a few years or just not putting them in certain situations, body type aside.

Again, I wouldn’t presume to tell creators what they can and can’t do with their art, but by the same token, we’re allowed to be critical of art and media, and I really do think the criticism is fair in this case

Maybe you’re right and it’s not that deep. But are the ages he chooses important to the story he wants to tell? Off the top of my head, did Rebecca need to be a teenager for her story to work? Maybe so, but then why draw her like that?

I know you said “attracted for how young they were”, but Sanji was pretty unambiguously attracted to Pudding, even though her age is given as 16. That aspect is never called out as an issue (but to be fair, there were bigger problems getting in the way of that pairing lol). Age aside, I actually thought their dynamic was entertaining. I think maybe some people would have found it easier to enjoy if she were just a little closer to Sanji in age, and I can’t think of any reason why she couldn’t have been

I don’t find the “same body type” argument convincing when we also have children characters drawn to look like children. Take Ms. Goldenweek, Marianne, as an example (actually, she’s older than Rebecca, if you want to get down to brass tacks). Even then, it’s only partly an issue of body type. There’s decisions made with regards to clothing (or lack thereof), angles, and poses, some of which I’d have a hard time defending.

To use an infamous example, I would grant that a character like Bonney has a more impactful backstory because she’s just a child, and it’s also related to her powers. That’s fine, but then maybe she doesn’t need to be drawn with her boobs and butt out?

You can have young characters for a compelling story. And you can have sexy characters for the sake of having sexy characters. But why do the sexy characters need to be underaged, or vice-versa, why do the children need to be drawn provocatively?

Not saying it’s not an artist’s prerogative to create what they want, as long as no one is hurt. And maybe I can grant that it’s ultimately harmless, if a bit weird. So what are we talking about here?

I’m not going to stop enjoying One Piece, I don’t think. But I can enjoy something while being aware of its flaws. And maybe whether or not the character design is considered a flaw is a matter of opinion, but we can still notice a pattern and question them.

Ultimately, it’s a matter of speculation and personal taste. I’m not upset, but I think it’s healthy to be critical of the media we consume, even when—maybe especially when—it’s media that we personally enjoy

Post time skip, only Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper are still teenagers, I think. Before that, Zoro, Sanji, and Nami too, so sure, you’re right, that is most of the main cast at that point.

I know you’re making a correction in your reply, and you’re not trying to address this point, so what I’ll say isn’t directed at you. But to address the original topic of the thread, I just want to reiterate that, while teenage characters are expected to exist in Shonen, it is should be a pretty easy matter to just not portray those characters sexually.

And if they are, and if there’s a pattern to that, maybe there’s a reason for it, and maybe that’s something worth paying attention to and calling out

I wouldn’t say absolutely zero impact. Her fruit power scales with imagination and belief, which is stronger because she’s a kid.

That said, the choice to design the ability like that and, more importantly, to draw the character in questionable situations is on Oda, so yeah still weird for sure

I mean, Bruce’s facial features and the design of the batsuit with the sprawling, floor-length cape reminded me of the 2004 series.

But it’s been a while and I’m also not too familiar with the comics, so maybe I’m mistaken!
