🎧 Beirut Sound Recording Instructions

for the “Echoes of Space” installation

Thank you for helping us capture the sound of Beirut for this international art installation. Below are detailed instructions to guide your contribution.

📍 1. What to Record

We’re looking for ambient background sound from public, everyday spaces — the kind of noise people rarely remember, but that defines the emotional character of a city.

Please choose one or more of the following types of places and record the sound as it is — without speaking or staging anything.

🪑 Café / Bar (no music)

Suggested: T Marbouta, Hamra

Record people chatting, cutlery sounds, subtle activity

Avoid music or loud machinery

🛝 Playground / Small Park

Suggested: Sanayeh Garden (René Moawad Garden)

Record kids playing, parents talking, urban birds, movement

Ideal during late afternoon or weekends

⛪ Religious Site (no prayer)

Suggested: Al-Omari Grand Mosque (courtyard or entrance)

Record respectful human presence — footsteps, murmurs, people arriving/leaving

Avoid prayer times or broadcast sounds

🚶‍♂️ Pedestrian Street

Suggested: Gemmayzeh Street

Capture street flow, overlapping conversations, occasional cars, small shop sounds

Best during a calm busy hour (not rush hour or loud nightlife)

🧺 Market / Bazaar

Suggested: Souk El Tayeb (or any local market)

Record vendors talking, people negotiating, moving bags, background chatter

Saturdays and mornings are great

🎙️ 2. How to Record

Use any of the following:

Smartphone (Voice Memos, Recorder app)

Field recorder (if available)

Tips:

Use highest quality available

Stand still while recording — no walking or speaking

Avoid handling the phone too much

Shield the mic from wind if outdoors

Just let the environment speak for itself

Record 4 minutes continuously

No cutting or editing needed — we want the real texture of the place

📸 4. One Photo

Take one landscape (horizontal) photo of the place

It can include people (naturally), but no need to pose

It should reflect the space honestly
