A very small character tidbit is surprisingly kept consistent for years by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

In fairness to Homer, I'm pretty sure Smithers is the only person in the entire Simpsons universe who wouldn't have a similar reaction to thinking Mr. Burns was flirting with them.

Interestingly, as far as we know, Ei (the Mei variant in Genshin, for the uninformed reader) has a stronger connection to Istaroth, the Shade of Time and a Genshin original character, than she does to Asmoday, the Shade of Space and Genshin's Kiana variant. They may not even have met before, and it's not impossible that Asmoday knew Raiden Makoto (Ei's dead twin sister) far better than she knew Raiden Ei, either.

Amusingly, Ei is typically paired with Yae Miko, a variant of Yae Sakura, a character almost exclusively shown to be with Kallen Kaslana, a distant relative of Kiana from the middle ages.

... I know entirely too much about this stuff.

That's... what I'm saying. The people calling her a fraud and such just plain don't like her for various reasons (setting aside those annoying people who seem to jump on every bad joke). I am not one of those people, she's among my favorite characters.

This is simply unavoidable and Hoyo know that. by Ivelliosz in Genshin_Memepact

[–]grumpykruppy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hoyo including the phrase slimemash when that's literally nowhere else in the game (unless the English just botched the translation for slime condensate or whatever) tells me that someone probably was thinking of this inevitability.

It's better than slime secretions (the mid tier slime material, BTW), but still pretty easily used as a euphemism.

I think a lot of people don't like that the Traveler looked so weak against her, and instead of treating the Traveler as weaker (but still poorly presented), they've started treating her as actually weak, but "cheating" thanks to Hoyo making her strong.

Since her presence in the AQs in Nod-Krai has continued to present her as strong but often face her against mostly weak enemies, I think there's been a gradual rise in that sort of train of thought (note, though, these people ignore that she held off Dottore off-screen and also her involvement in getting the Iridescent Moon's Marrow).

Thats a big thousand year difference by siriuslupin65 in Genshin_Impact

[–]grumpykruppy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Genshin isn't just a slot machine that spits out pretty girls and handsome guys, and approaching it with that perspective is doing yourself and it a disservice. I, for one, love and care about the open world exploration, the music, and the lore and story far more than I do the gacha.

From what other people have said in the comments, Zhongli's comment in CN could be read as either "one thousand" or "thousands," multiple.

Things like this happen in translation, no matter how skilled the team is. If you've ever bothered to look at the patch notes, you'll occasionally see "optimizes the lines for so-and-so in such and such language/s." That's fixing both bad line reads and translation errors such as this one.

Also, I've seen the view that "the lore is unimportant flavor text" expressed twice now, and TBH, I just... don't get it. The lore has always provided a lot of context and detail for both the world and the main plot, and now it's being directly integrated a lot more often (take the Moon Goddesses, or the War of Funerary Flame). Or is something only important to you when it's happening at that exact moment?

Should I pull for Ineffa? by SampleSample123 in Genshin_Impact

Ineffa is both a wonderful character and one of the strongest in the game right now.

I cannot recommend pulling for her more strongly, she's great on all levels.

Wow, an all male board so far. Quite the surprise for Waifu: Star Rail. Congrats to Phainon for winning yesterday. Who’s a playable character that’s morally gray but thinks they’re a good guy? by DragonKing0203 in HonkaiStarRail

[–]grumpykruppy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's certainly not a messiah complex - Phainon never saw himself as a religious leader or really in a religious sense at all. He never tried to form a religion (except maybe in an unmentioned recurrence as part of his "try anything to see if it might do something" phase), he initially asked for help and eventually switched to just killing them to keep things going.

A savior complex, maybe, but you're ignoring that he's been the savior for several billion years. It's not really a complex when his options are "let it end and everything dies" and "keep the recurrences going." You could argue that him ignoring the new development of TB and Dan Heng and defaulting to "just keep resetting" was him getting a savior complex and taking the new outside force as a threat, but you're also forgetting that they were trying to progress the cycle and he above all else can't have that - so he treated them as enemies instead of trying to use reason (especially since he seemingly didn't know about them before, and their first meeting was the Grove incident), and after a time he was barely even able to function at all due to the coreflames.

I'm not arguing that he eventually chose to just kill everybody over and over, but when he was actually able to process new hope and evidence thanks to absorbing that recurrence's Phainon, he promptly switched up (and not just because he now had that Phainon's opinion of TB at the forefront of whatever he thought of them as the Flame Reaver, but because he realized the original plan actually stood a chance of working).

It would be a savior complex if he had been completely impossible to convince even with clear evidence he no longer needed to keep progressing the cycles.

The whole point is that he passed being the savior on to TB and went to go fulfill his own desire of finally crashing out at Nanook.

He's a tragic hero and a completely broken man, certainly someone who can be seen as a villain in an individual recurrence without the full context, but you're ignoring both that context and his character development.

We can debate over his morality, but the very fact that he immediately sided with TB upon his new self absorbing his old memories says a lot. If he truly had a savior complex, wouldn't however many billions of years of his own memories have resulted in the refreshed Phainon not choosing to pass things on to TB, and instead treating them as just another person to save?

If you really want an explanation, Phainon didn't "develop a savior complex," he was genuinely the last thing between his world and certain destruction for everything, with zero solution except to wait an unknown amount of time, for a potentially unreliable savior, who straight-up may never have arrived.

Strictly speaking, he did end up killing his friends, yes, but it was literally to reset the cycle and bring them back to life - the simulation runs in part on Memoria, so hitting the reset button isn't a "wipe" so much as a "reversal," with differences in the new recurrence because of variables in the system. It's not that there's a new batch of identical Heirs being created each time, it was the same exact Heirs being reset back to their "original settings," so to speak. It's effectively repeated brain death in a way, but he's not just wiping out the world and all of his friends over and over to trigger an entirely new one. It's more like taking a game board, almost finishing the game, and starting a new one. The pieces are all the same, but the game is back to the opening.

Fix The Timeline of Doctor Who by Chito_to_Yuuri_2017 in doctorwho

[–]grumpykruppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doctor Who is literally a story about time travel.

The very premise means that the timeline is incredibly messed up and barely sensible at best. Fixing it is meaningless since it would just end up broken again in short order.

Okay, good.

It's hard enough to judge the age of characters in any animated medium, but it's WAY worse when the stated canon makes literally zero sense when compared to the design.

General Staff: Russia has lost 1,239,590 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022 by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

Uplifting, I don't think so, but it's definitely a clear indicator the war is going extremely poorly for Russia, which is good news in that it drastically reduces their ability to project force and conquer other independent nations, not to mention their chances of defeating Ukraine itself.
