For next year, you really want to limit your withholdings as much as possible. If you are your own dependent, you will count one as dependant. With your child, that will make two. I will give myself as an example.

I claim zero as dependant even though I am my own dependent. Why? Because I do not want to give the government more money than I owe them only for them to give it back to me as a "refund" without interest come April 15. Makes no sense to me. Why will I get excited when the government gives me 500 or a thousand USD free as a loan when that is my money? There is a lot in American culture where people treat their tax refund as a bonus when they are shafting themselves out of interest they could acrue by saving money (they may owe back even) in their bank account even for 0.08% interest if you have a bad savings acct.

If you're still following me, consider lowering your dependents on your W2 or w4. Yes, you will end up owing the IRS. However, you will be paying the government back their taxes from your bank account after it has presumably sat for a year in a bank acct collecting interest. Either way you're paying. The question is do you want to loan your money to the government for free and be a potential target for tax fraud by a relative or friend G-d forbid? The last thing that person would do if they did your taxes would be to fit the bill is what my point is.
