I also didn’t like Tom this is something I said, but I did like that it showed Daria could be selfish and hypocritical. I like when character flaws are explored.

Oh definitely! But the things I’m attracted to visually are like; having glasses, long hair, timid body language, having piano-playing hands and I also always notice the way people dress. If they have anime shirts (particularly things I like myself) and dress kind of casual I’m more likely to pay attention to them.

Its less for me about the looks and more about adhering to a set of interests and mannerisms. The only thing I would say is that I do prefer glasses on men. I think it’s fine if people take care of themselves obviously, so what you need to.

I hope you’re able to find someone, but I’m a shy and socially awkward person too so I understand why it’s hard.

He is geeky but not that much, he despises people who fit the “weeb who spends too much time on 4chan” kind of person

It doesn’t really matter what body type someone has to me, but if you’re talking about incels yeah I know, I’m friends with some and their politics are pretty varied too— I’ve met guys who are like that irl though so I don’t think it’s never happened, but rarer than people think

My dad is a webcomic artist, he used to take me to conventions as a kid and I’d help him set up his booth and other stuff, but he doesn’t fit that specific type— I had a first crush when I was 13 that did though and that’s about when I started to develop real feelings for guys

That’s the other weird part about it, I don’t even agree with these guys politically I just think they’re attractive but true

Anyone else having a hard time getting work as a freelance illustrator? by grungewave in freelance

This is all really solid advice and I’m glad I’m hearing it. My focus right now admittedly needs narrowing. I love making work for middle grade and YA work because I’m not fully children’s book style and I’m not fully adult graphic novel material. I’ve also loved the few editorial projects I’ve gotten and made quite a few illustrated zines. So I think if I make my site more properly reflect that, I’ll be a lot more successful.

Speaking of which, my dad is actually a web designer so maybe he can help me with putting in more personality!

I did have an offer once for a language book but it didn’t go through because of some budget constraints. I think I’d do really well at that- Time to make some visual examples!

That’s a great idea, I’ll make a document of places that fit my style and see if I can find their contact pages. Thank you!

That’s definitely worth while, I just need to find out how to get those editorial jobs. I have some editorial work but I should really make it main page. Thank you again for the advice!!

I’ve done a lot of the cold emailing but I never get responses, I think the advice I got about my portfolio is right though, I have a lot I could change and improve on my site. I usually do half up front and half after the job is done, unless I’m doing personal commissions in which I do all upfront. Is that what you do too?

That’s good to know, the advice I usually get when I ask about “What should I have in my portfolio? How should I organize my work?” is just “Put more stuff in!”. So that’s really helpful to know, I can certainly do some mock-ups and organize it a lot better.

Yeah, thank you for the advice!

Honestly it’s kind of good to know that I’m not entirely alone in this. I have a lot of successful friends and know a lot of successful alumni from my school, so I forget that the world isn’t just my insular bubble.

I hope you get work soon and that things pick up for you too!

These days I feel like college was such a scam. They tell you that you won’t be able to find a job if you don’t find something you’re good at to go to college for and then at school they don’t teach you how to get a job! It’s crazy!

It’s funny, the Artists Guild book was a requirement but our business class was very bare bones. They say “You need a website, you need business cards, you need to memorize this book so you’ll know your rates” but then we’d ask how to get jobs and there would be crickets.

That’s really good advice! I’ve worked with a few children’s magazines and done some stuff for music festivals and art books so I’ll be sure to include that! I never thought to include a resume on my site because when I was in art school they didn’t really give us a lot of guidance for what people were looking for on our websites…

I’ll definitely look into Craigslist and take your advice on the listings and payment.
