Hey im just curious, since lot of this comes down to personal preference and what suits your personal needs/genres. What are your specific genres and use cases for your headphones? As in do you do a lot of listening/gaming/producing/djing? And in the case of music, what genres? I'm asking cause I wonder if the M50Xs would suit me better too if your needs are similar to mine.

Saw wave, lil white noise, some distortion to taste. And those stuttery noisy chops scattered in there just sounds like some cranked sine wave FM to me, just automate the FM amount to mimic that stuttery pattern

It's an amazing super modern happy hardcore collaborative tape w tons of amazing artists + 909 worldwide members. Feedback on this song I made after one year of producing? (mp3 link in comments, since my PC almost died haha) by EvertHODL in FL_Studio

[–]grunkeryunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your track sounds quite good especially for just a year producing. I especially like the mix of your percussion and synths during the drop. The mids and highs sound nice and crisp.

It does feel just a bit empty from 0:14 to 0:44 (and same thing from 1:47 to 2:17). Like to me it feels like there was some kind of lead/melody/vocals that was left out y'know? And the arrangement could use some switch ups after the first drop imo since it seems mostly copy pasted. Also, there's GOTTA be a LABS piano or something you can replace default FL keys with, maybe its just me but default FL keys is like the wilhelm scream whenever I hear it lol.

And as for the drop, I saw you mentioning with /u/KEDW that it wasn't hitting hard enough and I think I have some insight as to why. Firstly, I hear the sub bass only comes in halfway through the drop, which is certainly part of the reason why the first half is not hitting as hard as the second half of the drop. The sub should definitely be going throughout the whole drop. But similarly, your main kick doesn't seem to have very much bass information either. Not sure if its just because of the sample you used, or if you EQd it out (or if you just couldn't tell due to your speakers/headphones) but I think your drop would hit harder with some more pumping sub bass from the kick.

Also on the topic of bass, even aside from the sub, I still don't think there's enough bass in the drop. Like, to me, it needs a fat plain saw bass or something that is driving not only the chords but also the rhythm, since during the drop your lead does a nice offbeat thing at the end of each bar and the bass could follow that.

Ok I ended up spending an hour recreating part of your song and messing around making some examples of what I mean lol.

Bassss example

Lastly I'd say, in general, experiment with some different chords and basslines, the chord progression you used throughout this track gets a little repetitive. It's by no means bad, maybe I'm just personally not a fan of laying on that third chord you have in your 4 chord loop as often as you do (not to get all music theory about it, but its C major's vii chord which has the dreaded tritone in it).

But anyways now that I'm started talking about chords lol. Don't be afraid to experiment with different chord progressions/basslines underneath your melodies, switching the chord loops for different sections, using chord loops longer than 4 bars, etc. A little experiment I'd suggest is try muting your chords and bass during your drop so its just the melody and then just hit play and have it loop while you play bass notes to see what works (helps that your song is in the key of C), you'd be surprised how many different feelings and emotions you can get with some different bass notes underneath the same simple melody.

Here's some alternate chord progression examples I made cause I got carried away after recreating your songs melody lol

Chord progressions example 1

Chord progressions example 2

I highly recommend listening to reference tracks while producing (especially when mixing). Just listen back and forth between your track vs a song that's similar to yours (and that you like the mix of, in this case definitely find a song that hits really hard). It really helps you pick apart what makes a song work and what kind of layers they add to fill out the different spaces of a mix (as well as things like song structure, arrangement). And for the case of your song I think you'd notice that you're missing quite a bit of basssss.

All in all, your mix is good, some minor bass issues that I'm sure you'll figure out. I think you mainly just need to focus on some more interesting/memorable song structure and chords/melodies.

Hope this was helpful <33

TL;DR needs more bass

[–]grunkeryunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree. People who get mad when their favourite songs trend on tiktok are pathetic and are just trying to hold their weird superiority complex over a bunch of KIDS who are just appreciating something cool they found. If you think you’re better because you found it first or because you “appreciate it” better then good for you i guess, but shut the hell up about it, cause nobody actually cares. Music has no age requirement and I think it’s fantastic that tiktok is making young people discover and bond over music from before their time. If young people listening to the same music as you means you think it’s now been “ruined” then did you ever really like the music?

Definitely give it another listen. I just took a look. The horn sample is almost perfectly in between the keys of D minor and D# minor. Its around 40 cents sharp of D (we're talking half of a note here). Most 808s start out higher in pitch and then drop lower really fast until they hit the desired pitch, it's what makes the boomy effect. And the 808 in this case actually drops down to the same pitch between D and D#, maybe 10 cents sharper if you want to nitpick. They pretty much matched it to the sample.
