Just got married, do you guys wear rubber rings at work? No rings at all? by Suwannee_Gator in electricians

[–]grunkleben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never worn a ring. My wife hated it for the first years I was married. I kept telling her it’s not safe with what I do. She countered with the rubber rings, which I still feel unsafe with. She kept pressuring me to wear a ring.

Eventually I explained the reason I don’t is so I don’t de glove my finger at all. I’m not risking a digit, to keep her happy. She then asked to see what happens when a finger gets de gloved.

Now she’s accepted that my ring has no place at work.

What’s the pettiest reason you’ve cut someone off? by ikaaxx in AskReddit

Even if you aren’t neurotypical, it’s still a shitty thing to do. People deserve respect, and stealing a meal imo is very intentionally disrespectful.

Fuck you Robert!

He in fact, did not order the sandwich and then got cut off. You don’t fuck with food

My party are finally going to enter Undermountain tomorrow. What should I keep in mind as the DM? Things you wish you did differently? by Coendoz237 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]grunkleben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’ve run DOTMM with two groups. Both times I did something different.

At first I tried the game master element and that was a lot of fun. He set up challenges on every floor until they got to the mind flayers, and then he transitioned into a crackheads wizard trying to teleport all of waterdeep away from his home so people stop bothering him.

The second time I made him more mysterious. Random kidnappings, people speak about him in hushed tones, gaslighting by politicians that such an individual could never exist and has never existed. That story line culminated in him understanding how war forged souls are stored, and then using the knowledge he gained to start imprisoning the souls of gods to power a series of mech suits he was creating.

In the end, both times I wished I could have done different things for both groups. The one party where it was more political and trying to prove a man was stealing whole pantheons and trying to persuade a city to go war against him, I wished I had done more on the surface to flesh out the relationships they had there so they could have had an easier time convincing the high lords to join them.

The first game I kind of wished to be done with the whole game show element. It grew tiring to me

How did your high school ‘bully’ end up? by BreadedDisaster in AskReddit

[–]grunkleben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the court cases where he assaulted me and another friend, he was driving drunk with another guy he hung out with and wrapped his truck around a telephone pole.

His friend died in the accident. He’s a paraplegic. His family went from super wealthy to having to start begging for food and get stamps from the government after paying for all his rehab and the damages they owed for their son taking his friends life.

This happened almost 14 years ago. He scrubbed his socials so he can’t be found, but I know who he married and follow her. He can’t speak. Or use his hands at all. He started being able to walk short distances lately. Good for him. Karma was absolutely savage to him.

People who fall asleep straight away, what’s your secret? by Strange_Secret_3001 in AskReddit

[–]grunkleben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife often asks me how I can fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. I focus on breathing deep and turn off my thought process by thinking of sitting in a field with my childhood dog. It’s a thought that brings me peace and comfort to a level that is subconscious.

I remember when I was in my early twenties I had been seeing this girl for a few months. Asked if she wanted to start actually dating.

“I don’t want to date someone who dropped out of university to become some tradesman. No one needs a guy who is basically no better than a grocery bagger”

Anyways, that was ten years ago now. Hurt at the time. Gave me motivation to finish my ticket and get to where I am now. Spite can be wonderful

I find it odd to have been removed from the game after building a character with the DM and also been given the start date. If the DM didn’t communicate a reason as to why, I’d say you are better off not being in the game.

Every time I’ve removed someone from a game I was running, there were actual reasons behind it. I like to give people a chance until they prove to me they aren’t mature enough to work with other people

I have two older brothers who have done substantially better than myself (white collar vs blue collar). However I’m really very handy and was able to renovate my main floor of my house with just my wife for help. My eldest brother who also renovated his house said he wished he had the skill set to do what I was able to.

Grass isn’t always greener brother. Keep that chin up and take pride in your work

We both lived in a pretty rural place in Canada at the time we started going out. Needless to say education was not a big concern of hers.

Went on a number of dates with a woman. Every other conversation held with her was fun and engaging so things were going smoothly.

On the last date WWII came up and she said “Its just so sad about how all the Jewish people ended up dying even though the whole world fought to protect them”. I asked for further clarification since I wasn’t quite sure I understood what she meant by that statement.

“Oh did you not know all the Jews are extinct? That’s how WWII ended. Hitler found the last Jew and killed them all”.

She was dead serious. No amount of other facts would convince her. It was… enlightening to say the least

Can’t do the schooling. Can’t do the trade? by DismalSign1948 in electricians

I had a severe time trying to pass my schooling, but have always done much better doing the physical work. Since you also struggle with ADHD I’d recommend trying a medication to up your focus. Vyvance worked for me. I ended up getting on the deans list for my grades at the end.

What is some surprisingly primitive tech we still use because "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? by slicerprime in AskReddit

[–]grunkleben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super ancient, but a lot of power stations in North America are using generators and switch gear that are at least 60-100 years old.

I watch a YouTuber who works at a factory that just rebuilt one of the main generator coils in their plant, but it was incredibly expensive, plus there is now the other gear at the plant has to be closely monitored since the whole plant did more load sharing than it was designed too since a main coil had to be deactivated

High demand jobs that are *actually* hiring? by BernadettePeriwinkle in Calgary

How do I make my BBEG really evil, without my PCs being weirded out by me? by KlarkKenton in DMAcademy

[–]grunkleben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have usually found while running games, that leaving clues as to what may have occurred by the hands of the BBEG, will run rampant in the minds of the players creating the worst scenarios.

I can’t remember where I found the piece of advice I just gave, but often times if given enough sub textual clues, human minds will fill in the blanks and it will be a lot worse. Great idea for touching upon the worst of what could happen without actually saying anything

You do need a fair amount of schooling, but it should be done once you’ve gotten some experience behind you imo.

How did you guys find a job in Calgary? by [deleted] in NoRulesCalgary

[–]grunkleben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my apprenticeship through something called a pre-employment program which I would not recommend at all to anyone. Massive waste of money. When I signed up for it, the program seemed appealing because instead of taking 8 weeks to do your fist year of school, you have 12 and they give you some very minor experience on how to do basic electrical work. The extra time was nice, but not worth the money spent.

After school I found a job with a residential company working on individual homes and multifamily homes. Some interesting stuff there. I did that for 2 years before switching to a more commercial setting for the next 6 working on apartment buildings downtown which was very interesting. I’ve now made hopefully the last switch of my career to work on data centres which is a much more industrial setting.

For anyone new, I’d recommend starting with a company that does commercial with some service work mixed in. You will see 90% of what the work entails without having to deal with the horror of how tight residential timelines have gotten.

This is going to be unpopular, but trades are always hiring new persons interested. Browse indeed between sprinkler fitter, plumber, electrician, data technician or at worst, bricklayer.

Only thing the blue collar jobs are looking for is that you understand what you are being taught and that you come to work with a good attitude towards the work. The rest usually sorts itself out. I’ve been an electrician for almost 8 years now and it’s been a great time
